6 days Nairobi, Borana Wildlife Conservancy, Mount Kenya National Park
This adventurous northern Kenya safari is experience-driven. Yes, it includes remarkable wildlife viewing in traditional open 4x4 vehicles on game drives, but there's so much more on offer in the region surrounding Mount Kenya.
Commence your journey at Hemingways Nairobi, a stunning property overlooking the jade-green Ngong Hills renowned for its personal butler service.
Fly north to the remote and private Borana Wildlife Conservancy. It is highly unlikely that you will meet anyone else during your wildlife safari, enabling you to turn the plains – teeming with wildlife – into your personal wonderland. Days will be spent exploring the bush on foot, by bicycle and on horseback, and your evenings spent sipping sundowners at dusk.
Your final morning here will include a helicopter excursion to Mount Kenya, in time for breakfast by a mountaintop lake as the early morning mists clear and reveal spectacular views in all directions.
The final jewel in the crown is The Emakoko, a slice of paradise in Nairobi's national park. What better way to end your time in Kenya, than surrounded by 400 species of birds and four of the Big 5, plus supporting the endangered Black Rhino which are prolific in this park.
In just 6 days, you will enjoy the adventure described in Atlas magazine and, as with all our example itineraries, it can be adapted in duration and content to suit your travel preferences precisely.
Upon arrival at the international airport, you shall be met by a Wayfairer Travel representative for a private transfer to your hotel, Hemingways Nairobi. Renowned for its personal butler service and spectacular views over the Ngong Hills, Hemingways is just away from the bustle of Nairobi.
Depending on your time of arrival, at Hemingways enjoy a signature spa treatment, unwind by the pool, or head to the bar for pre-dinner cocktails. Alternatively, a range of activities such as visiting the nearby David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage or the Giraffe Centre are popular starts to the safari experience.
On your second day, your Wayfairer Travel representative will transfer you to Nairobi's small Wilson airport, which is just for light aircraft flights. You'll fly to Lewa, in the heart of Laikipia County. Here, you shall be met by a representative from Borana Lodge and your safari commences the moment you step off the plane. Scan the horizon for your first glimpse of the endemic elephant, giraffe, antelope and zebra as you make your way to Borana Lodge, your home for the next three nights.
Once you’ve settled in, it’s time to commence your adventure in earnest. Opt to take a picnic lunch and head to Borana’s neighbouring forested playground, the Ngare Ndare Forest Trust. Walk through the canopy on suspended walkways, granting you a privileged viewpoint over the landscape and wildlife below. Explore its rock pools of crystalline spring water and cascading waterfalls, before returning to the lodge for dinner via a sun-downers at the spectacular Pride Rock.
Your next two days will be spent on an active safari, exploring the landscape and encountering wildlife in an array of exciting ways.
Early morning bush walks and exciting rhino tracking experiences are some of the most exhilarating ways to explore the Conservancy. During a rhino tracking experience, you will learn about the tireless work that goes into protecting these creatures, whilst also getting to know the rangers themselves.
Lunchtimes can be spent down by the river, with mountain bikes and a picnic lunch, spotting hippos and other wildlife along the way, whilst a visit to the organic farm at Borana is often a winning activity with guests. Before the sun sets, head out on picture-perfect horse-rides through the bush, covering a greater distance (and closer proximity to wildlife) than would often be possible on foot.
The action needn’t stop here: Borana is also home to ATVs, paragliding equipment and some excellent fishing spots.
Guests interested in the conservation element at Borana Lodge can accompany rangers on evening deployments or even during veterinarian visits, whilst those interested in the local culture are welcome to visit the school and the nearby Masai Village, where a village Elder will greet and guide you through the village, the community’s customs and their history, concluding with a tribal dance where you won’t be exempt from the action.
On your last morning at Borana Lodge, you enjoy a scenic helicopter excursion to Mount Kenya with Tropic Air.
Soaring over the plains, you will soon reach the spectacular foothills of Mount Kenya, which pierces the sky in dramatic fashion. You will settle on the mountain to explore the rugged scenery and enjoy breakfast with a difference, before trying your hand at rainbow trout fishing in one of its beautiful, glittering lakes. Tropic Air is the leading provider of helicopter excursions in northern Kenya, and all pilots are trained as extensively knowledgeable guides, including your fishing-instructor-cum-pilot.
Upon your return to Borana Lodge, it is time to enjoy a final 50 minute game drive to Lewa airstrip for your light aircraft flight back to Nairobi.
Once back in the city's Wilson airport, you shall be met by a representative from The Emakoko, who will transfer you to your boutique lodge in Nairobi National Park. This remarkable property offers a ‘safari in the city’ experience. You will arrive in time for a rest – perhaps by the pool, or maybe in The Emakoko’s library – before enjoying a dusk game drive, followed by a delicious dinner and drinks by the fire.
This morning, enjoy a final dawn game drive, absorbing the peace of the morning as wildlife slowly wakes up. It will be a final chance to catch a glimpse of elusive and enigmatic species like cheetah, leopard and lion.
Return to the lodge for a sumptuous breakfast and, depending on the time of your departing international flight, opt to recline by the pool or in the communal living spaces in the lodge, or alternatively head into town for a cultural experience. By appointment, The Emakoko can arrange a variety of activities and visits to design studios and art galleries.
Your time in Kenya has come to an end, but what an astonishing amount to have experienced in just six days. We hope you will want to return to Africa with Wayfairer again soon.
