When to go to Ecuador
Warm and wet on the mainland, which makes the highlands beautifully green. Good for Quito, Otavalo markets, and cloud forests. In the Galápagos, seas are calmer and wildlife is active.
Similar to January, with tropical showers that freshen the landscape. Cultural travel is still easy since rain often comes in bursts. Galápagos remains excellent for snorkeling and marine life.
Wettest period on the mainland, but forests, valleys, and haciendas look spectacular. Good for travelers who value scenery over sunshine. Galápagos is warm and especially good for underwater activities.
Rains begin to ease but landscapes stay lush. A very good month to combine the Andes, Avenue of the Volcanoes, and the Galápagos, where islands are green and birdlife is active.
One of the best months to visit Ecuador overall. Drier on the mainland, clear views of volcanoes, and comfortable temperatures in Quito and Cuenca. Galápagos moves toward the cooler, drier season.
Dry season begins in the Andes. Bright, sunny days, cool nights, and local festivals. Ideal for cultural touring, hiking, and riding on the high plateau. Galápagos sees more marine life.
Clear, cool, and excellent for the highlands. Great for outdoor activities, hacienda stays, and photography. Seas can be a bit choppier in Galápagos, but wildlife viewing is very good.
Similar to July. Dry in the Andes, good for multi-stop itineraries that include Quito, Cotopaxi, and the Quilotoa region. A popular month, so lodges can fill up.
Still relatively dry and calm. A very good shoulder month for both mainland and Galápagos, with fewer visitors than in July and August.
Light rains return, but travel remains comfortable. Highlands are green again, and it is a good time for birding and cloud forest lodges.
Variable weather, but generally good for culture, markets, and day trips from Quito. Galápagos remains a year-round option, with good wildlife activity.
Festive and pleasant on the mainland, with some showers. A good time for Quito and Cuenca city breaks. Galápagos is excellent for holiday sailings and family trips.

Where to go in Ecuador
In the Galapagos, meet marine iguanas, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies. Explore Quito’s colonial streets and Andean views. Around Riobamba and Baños, find waterfalls, biking routes, and thermal pools. Travel into Ecuadorian Amazonia for canopy wildlife and quiet lagoons. Walk Cotopaxi National Park for páramo scenes, wild horses, and glacier-lined horizons.
Cotopaxi National Park
Cotopaxi National Park’s sublime volcanic setting accounts for the country’s most awe-inspiring vistas. It is regarded as one of the most breathtaking national parks in South America.
Dominated by the perfect snow-capped cone of one of the world's highest active volcanoes, Cotopaxi National Park creates a dramatic silhouette along Ecuador's legendary Avenue of Volcanoes. This high-altitude sanctuary of windswept paramo and emerald valleys serves as a spectacular playground for exploration.
Guests can gallop across the Andean plains on horseback alongside local chagra cowboys or hike the trails around Limpiopungo Lagoon to spot wild horses and the majestic Andean condor. Despite the rugged terrain, the region is defined by its exquisite historic haciendas. These converted colonial estates offer roaring fireplaces and gourmet dining, ensuring a luxurious and atmospheric retreat that perfectly blends raw wilderness with refined heritage.
Ecuadorian Amazonia
A saturated pocket of rainforest, Andean slopes extend into impenetrable green, interrupted only by rivers overflowing with life
Deep within the Oriente region, the Ecuadorian Amazon offers a concentrated explosion of biodiversity that rivals any ecosystem on Earth. This accessible wilderness serves as the gateway to the UNESCO-listed Yasuní National Park, a verdant sanctuary teeming with monkeys, toucans, and jaguars.
A definitive highlight here is the vibrant spectacle of clay licks, where hundreds of macaws and parrots descend in a riot of color to feed. Guests can navigate the Napo River by motorized canoe to reach exclusive, community-owned eco-lodges that set the global standard for sustainable luxury. Here, expert indigenous guides reveal the medicinal secrets of the forest, ensuring a culturally profound and comfortable immersion in the jungle.
Galapagos Islands
This archipelago has transformed our understanding of life on Earth. It is our duty as visitors to respect this precious environment, delicately conserving and supporting the wildlife we interact with in Galápagos.
Situated 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands offer a living laboratory of evolution where wildlife exhibits no fear of humans. This volcanic archipelago presents a surreal landscape of lava fields and cactus forests, home to unique species like marine iguanas, giant tortoises, and blue-footed boobies.
The experience is defined by intimate encounters, whether snorkeling with playful sea lions or hiking active craters. Guests can choose between navigating the islands on a luxury expedition yacht or island-hopping from exclusive land-based eco-lodges. Strictly protected and deeply pristine, the Galapagos provides a transformative journey that combines scientific wonder with high-end comfort and sustainability.
Quito
One of the smallest of all South American cities, it is still an emblem of rich history combined with modern ideologies.
Cradled high in the Andes beneath active volcanoes, Quito holds the title of the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage city. Its historic center is the best-preserved in the Americas, a treasure trove of colonial art where guests can explore gilded churches and vibrant plazas on private walking tours.
Just minutes from the urban core, travelers can straddle the hemispheres at the Middle of the World or descend into the misty Chocó cloud forest, a biodiversity hotspot for hummingbirds and orchids. As the sophisticated gateway to the Galapagos, Quito invites you to stay in restored heritage mansions, enjoying world-class chocolate tastings and Andean gastronomy in a setting of timeless elegance.
Riobamba & Banos
Ecuador’s top adventure sites, tremendous falls named after the Devil, Saturday markets overlooked by volcanic peaks
Serving as the dramatic transition between the high Andes and the Amazon basin, the dual destination of Riobamba and Baños offers a spectacular contrast in landscapes. Riobamba sits in the shadow of Mount Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest peak, where guests can explore the windswept paramo to spot wild vicuñas against a backdrop of ice.
A short descent leads to Baños de Agua Santa, a lush subtropical sanctuary known as the 'Gateway to the Amazon.' Here, the experience is defined by the thunderous Pailón del Diablo waterfall and mineral-rich thermal springs fed by the Tungurahua volcano. Whether swinging over the abyss at the famous Casa del Árbol or relaxing in a historic spa hotel, this region perfectly balances alpine majesty with tropical relaxation.
