Japan offers much, with a history and culture so far removed from the West, that you won't believe you're still on the same planet. Its landscapes range from sparkling cityscapes to snow-capped mountain territories. So, it's not always easy to know where to start when thinking about booking a holiday to Japan. How can you ensure you take in everything this multi-faceted country has to offer within a short space of time?
What to do? Where to go?
It’s often referred to as the ‘Eighth Continent of the World’. After breaking away from the Indian subcontinent millions of years ago, Madagascar has evolved into a rich and utterly unique ecosystem. Today around 80% of its thousands of species cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
From sushi to skyscrapers, mountains to monuments, and ancient temples to high-speed trains, Japan truly is a world in one country
We have several popular itineraries that have been carefully crafted to include the most iconic destinations and activities.
Or you can create your own in consultation with our Travel Specialists, who’ll help you select the very best options according to your unique preferences.
Think about including an afternoon tea ceremony with a maiko (apprentice geisha) in Kyoto, a helicopter tour of Tokyo after dark, Samurai sword dancing lessons or unforgettable foodie experiences such as sake tasting sessions, bento-making classes, and a street food safari in Osaka.
And no trip to Japan would be complete without an indulgent dip in the volcanic waters of a mountain hot spring.

Japan's seasons are quite extreme: hot, humid summers and bitterly cold, snowy winters. Spring and autumn are the most popular seasons for tourists, who flock to the country to see the gorgeous colours of the cherry blossom (Sakura) season and the rich, warm hues of the changing leaves – both of which create picturesque settings in Japan’s parks, castle grounds, and rural areas. The Sakura festival in March sees the whole of Tokyo leaving their offices to admire the pretty cherry blossom trees in Shinjuku Gyoen Park, while in the winter, the snow festival in Sapporo, Hokkaido, showcases hundreds of ice sculptures lit up – it’s a magical experience for children and adults alike.
Summer (June - September)
Summer in Japan is marked by its rainy and typhoon seasons. Despite frequent rainfall, particularly in June and July, travel is seldom disrupted, except for transport links between Okinawa and the mainland. This season is also celebrated with numerous festivals, known as 'matsuri', often featuring spectacular fireworks displays.
