Mdonya Old River Camp is a small, adventurous tented camp located in the western part of Ruaha National Park, just a few kilometers from the stunning Mdonya Falls and a one to two hour drive from the airstrip.
Relax and explore this wonderful unspoilt region with ease, made possible with a small team of friendly staff in a small and simple 12 tented camp.
The park is home to several eco-systems, meaning that you will encounter various forms of wildlife and scenery. Being such a large and varied area, the camp offers all day game drives so that guests can cover large distances during their stay.
Game drives end with a sun downer, either out in the bush, or back at the camp’s sophisticated bar. Guests love watching elephants pass by their veranda, and the camp’s leopard is a curious visitor who entertains the guests on a regular basis.
Guest accommodation blends seamlessly into the environment, with no fencing between the wild animals and the tent exteriors. Spaced apart and underneath the shade of trees, the traditional safari tents have large private verandas and double or twin beds.
All are furnished with comfortable wooden furniture, and include mosquito repellent windows. The Meru-style tents have plenty of lighting for the evenings, if needed.
All tents have en-suite bathrooms, which feature flush toilets, open roofed showers, and a dressing room. The two Family tents are a fantastic space for larger groups, which can sleep four. These spaces consist of two rooms separated by a zip partition, and an en-suite is attached.
The camp is the typical safari experience; enjoy uninterrupted views of the bush from comfortable canvas tents. The dining tent is a hub of vibrant food, conversation, and attentive service. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner here while you overlook the dry riverbed and watch elephants and other game pass by.
Dine under canvas, or under the stars; both candlelit areas are warm and welcoming. Cuisine is made following a strict local produce policy, while daily baked sweet and savoury goods are made in the wonderful wood-fired oven.
The 12 tents are comfortably furnished, with storage space, double or twin beds, a writing desk, and torches, oil lamps, and candles for the evenings. The two family tents have two rooms separated by canvas. Guests have access to solar powered electricity in the camp office, which is a great facility for charging camera batteries.
The tent has a dining tent and a lounge tent, and there is electricity in a communal office
Food is made from locally sourced produce, and baked goods are made onsite every day.
The camp does a great deal to maintain conservation of its environment & community. All produce is sourced locally, energy is solar powered, and low impact resources such as eco-friendly charcoal and soap. The camp buys produce from local food projects.
