Set in the vast wilderness of Ruaha National Park this property is an absolute gem. Offering a classic luxury wilderness experience, Ikuka has just seven rooms and is a small owner run property that will leave you wanting more!
The spectacular location of this camp is atop the Mwagusi Escarpment.The site allows for breath taking views that are unparalleled by other accommodations in the area. All perfectly complemented by an intimate and personalized and experienced that can only be found in smaller accommodations in the African bush country.
Awaken in the morning to the calls of nature from the comfort of a large, cozy bed. When you are ready to start the day’s adventure, freshen up in the en-suite bathroom that offers a large stone vanity with two vessel sinks, shower, and toilet. You can then curl up with a cup of coffee or tea on your private elevated wood deck that surrounds the entire banda or in the relaxing sitting area, both of which provide breathtaking views of the Ruaha’s wilderness reserve.
Escape the crowds as you explore one of the continents remote wildernesses with game drives or safari walks. Known for its diverse landscapes of savannah, mighty baobab trees, miombo, rocky hills, kopjes and the Great Ruaha River itself; Ruaha is also home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including some of the largest populations of elephant and lion left anywhere in Africa. Also a birder’s paradise with more than 500 species of birds to be found.
With just seven rooms hugging the cliff you will enjoy your own private balcony and views. Each room allows air to flow through the open sides and is furnished with comfortable couches and a large king size bed – all rooms are en-suite. The honeymoon suite is set aside with fantastic sunset views and it's own private plunge pool. Room seven is the family unit, much more spacious this two-story room incorporates a private pool and a mezzanine twin room, a great option for friends as well if happy to share one bathroom.
The main common area is beautifully finished with a lovely lounge area and bar, a small gift shop and reading room and stunning pool, for those hotter afternoons! This wood and thatch construction is all open sided allowing the most of the views and great air flow. The neutral colours and natural building materials offer a calming and stylish look throughout the property.
This is a fantastic, social property, with lively pre-dinner drinks and communal dining at the captains table giving you the opportunity to make new friends and exchange safari stories.
There is a library, a well-stocked bar and brilliant infinity swimming pool with lounge area to relax away your siesta time and evenings. Enjoy game drives, safari walks, bush breakfasts and lovely picnics from this camp. The owner Mark Sheridan-Johnson is a brilliant walking guide.
Here you will enjoy communal dining, it’s a great way to meet fellow travellers and get to know your hosts and guides better. Private dining is available on request and the food is always outstanding! Fresh, local ingredients allow the kitchen to get creative whilst keeping you full!
Small family owned properties are a great option when looking to ensure a sustainable camp that really cares about the people on the ground, Ikuka is a great example of this. This camp also supports the Southern Tanzania Elephant Project, (STEP) who protect the long term security of elephants and the welfare of the communities on the borders of the protected areas in which they operate.
