Couples & Honeymoons
Take a step back in time with the Heritage Madurai and marvel at the former British Coat’s Madurai Club, remodelled into a stylish hotel.
Designed by the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the property is an oasis of 17-acres of lush green gardens with private villas.
Recently restored to its full glory, the building shows off its restorative roots by polishing the original local materials; honey-coloured stone sourced from the nearby hills and an abandoned mill, and support pillars from old derelict houses.
Today the Heritage Madurai is a sought after property and the perfect base to explore the temples of India’s oldest city from.
The Heritage Madurai has a range of accommodations on offer, from comfortable deluxe club rooms to luxurious villas complete with outdoor showers and their own plunge pool.
The main swimming pool on the property is uniquely styled to resemble a step-well water tank, with examples of these wells found in both Thirumalai and Meenakshi Amman Temples.
The 200 year old Banyan tree shades the main restaurant, which serves a cuisine of Indian and international dishes, and nearby is the Swig & Tee Bar, decorated in colonial club style and complete with virtual golf simulator.
Heritage Madurai offers three different room types depending on how much exploring and how much relaxing you plan on doing. The Deluxe Club rooms are spacious, air-conditioned and feature cool terracotta floors, Indian rugs, wooden furniture and views of the local gardens and forested areas. To better experience the history of this property, the Geoffrey Bawa rooms are named after the original architect and are light, airy and minimalistic, with a giant bathroom and granite floors.
The best rooms in the property are the Luxury Villas, with elements of the past intertwined into the interior of the rooms. These villas feature their own private courtyard filled with frangipani trees, a private plunge pool and sun deck for soaking up the good weather in privacy. The Heritage Spa has a menu of Ayurveda delights and there is also a cosy library, coffee shop and cultural village within the grounds of the Heritage Madurai.
The Heritage Spa has a range of local and well-known massage treatments on offer.
Banyan Restaurant serves contemporary Indian and popular International dishes. There is also a coffee shop and bar which serve light snacks.
Heritage Resorts has focused on sustainability and have strived to try and make the Heritage Madurai a green building. They have achieved a LEED Gold certification and have added features to reduce energy consumption, and lower the impact on the use of natural resources. The hotel cares for its natural garden surroundings and is one of the few green spots in the city.
