Designed by the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the property is an oasis of 17-acres of lush green gardens with private villas.

Recently restored to its full glory, the building shows off its restorative roots by polishing the original local materials; honey-coloured stone sourced from the nearby hills and an abandoned mill, and support pillars from old derelict houses.

The resort

Heritage Madurai offers three different room types depending on how much exploring and how much relaxing you plan on doing. The Deluxe Club rooms are spacious, air-conditioned and feature cool terracotta floors, Indian rugs, wooden furniture and views of the local gardens and forested areas. To better experience the history of this property, the Geoffrey Bawa rooms are named after the original architect and are light, airy and minimalistic, with a giant bathroom and granite floors.

The best rooms in the property are the Luxury Villas, with elements of the past intertwined into the interior of the rooms. These villas feature their own private courtyard filled with frangipani trees, a private plunge pool and sun deck for soaking up the good weather in privacy. The Heritage Spa has a menu of Ayurveda delights and there is also a cosy library, coffee shop and cultural village within the grounds of the Heritage Madurai.
