Couples, Families & Honeymoons

On the southern tip of Zanzibar, lies the perfect place to wind down after a strenuous trip. Unguja Lodge is a small, beachfront lodge situated on a quiet stretch of beach, featuring 10 private villas and two family houses.

Unguja Lodge is built around the existing natural vegetation – amongst ancient mango trees and baobab trees. Here wildlife thrives and it's easy to curious black tail monkeys, dik diks and chameleons.

Whether with your partner, family or honeymoon escape, start your mornings at the wondrous breakfast buffet. Complete with locally sourced fruit and freshly baked pastries. All elements exude a Swahili-style, but with a European twist to it.

Once energised and the mood to explore strikes, follow the nature trail to a permanent tidal beach for a refreshing swim or sun tan session.

For those interested in exploring the sea, there is an on-site 5-star PADI dive center where you can arrange a fun dive or take a full certification course.

During your time here, Rashid or any of the other staff will be more than obliging to show you the best of what Zanzibar has to offer. From taking you on a walking tour of the nearby Kizimkazi village, arranging excursions to spice farms, Prison Island, Stone Town, Menai Bai or Jozani Forest Reserve.

The lodge

Unguja Lodge offers 12 villas in total, all of which are decorated in traditional Zanzibari Style using natural materials. All sea view villas feature an open-air design with large thatched roofs that allow the sea breeze to circulate and keep your days cool. Within the bedrooms, there is coconut wood furniture, mosquito nets, ceiling fans, living room, open shower, private terrace and sea view. The baobab villas are set a little further back beneath other ancient baobab trees and feature a whirlpool plunge pool and air-conditioning. There are two family houses for larger guest parties or families.

In the main area there is the centerpiece pool that is sometimes used for PADI dive practice. The restaurant and bar is located nearby. All meals are served at the restaurant, with the breakfast buffet is one of the guests’ favourites. The cuisine here is a fusion of Swahili with a European twist. While there is a lighter lunch menu the dinner is a 3-course meal using Swahili recipes. Vegetarian food options are always available for guests.

Unguja's facilities include an outdoor pool, dive centre, yoga classes and spa treatments.

The breakfast buffet is a must for those visiting, serving in-season fruits and vegetables and baked pastries. There always are vegetarian dining options for guests.

Why Wayfairer

The lodge has one of the highest eco-accreditations for sustainable design in the area; the rooms provide utmost comfort without the compromise of upsetting the environment. Unguja Lodge also hires locally which helps support the community. The fees from guided village walks are re-invested to support village projects.
