This stylish beach retreat, located 8 km from the small town of Tangalle, is hidden amongst coconut groves on the gentle slopes of a hill and its understated contemporary wood and glass design complements the stunning surroundings.

Amanwella has 27 luxury suites - nestled on the hillside facing the bay - each with its own private plunge pool and large private terrace. There’s also a spectacular 47-meter infinity pool which overlooks the 800-meter tropical beach and the Indian Ocean.

With its laid back atmosphere and tranquil setting, Amanwella is the perfect place to unwind. However if you wish to do more than simply relax by the idyllic pool or stroll along the palm-fringed beach there are plenty of activities and excursions you can enjoy during your time here.

Snorkelling is fantastic in the winter when the sea is calm, whilst surfing is an option in the summer months when conditions are favourable.

The hotel offers guided nature walks, including visits to the local village spotting wildlife and birdlife along the way.

Local places of interest include Mulkirigala which is a 210-meter ancient Buddhist rock temple, Bundala, Udawalawe and Yala National Park.

The Turtle Conservation Project at Rekawa Beach is also near Tangalle. Unlike the turtle hatcheries on the west coast of Sri Lanka the eggs here are left undisturbed in the sand and are protected in situ.

The property

Amanwella’s 27 contemporary suites are set beneath towering palm trees overlooking the coconut grove and the Indian Ocean. The stylish and spacious suites feature floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors on both sides – one side opens out to a courtyard with a private plunge pool and the other side opens out to a terrace with double sun loungers, a dining table and chairs. The Garden Pool Suites offer views of the gardens and treetops, the Ocean Hill Pool Suites are situated on the hillside and have varying views of the coconut grove and the sea, and the Ocean Pool Suites are situated on the lower levels of the hill with uninterrupted views of the coconut grove, the idyllic beach and the Indian Ocean.

Amanwella’s main restaurant, simply called The Restaurant, overlooks the palm-fringed bay from its elevated platforms and terrace. The Restaurant serves Asian and Mediterranean dishes, with an emphasis on local seafood. Guests can also order food from The Beach Club throughout the day. Next to The Restaurant, the Lounge and Bar offers a wide selection of beers, wines and spirits. Below the restaurant and bar is Amanwella’s stunning 47m infinity pool and terrace with cushioned sun loungers.

The Restaurant’s menu features fresh fish and seafood that comes straight from the fishermen’s boats and all fruits, vegetables and spices are bought at local markets.
