Hidden within a grove of cathedral mopane trees overlooking the Hyena Pan, the only permanent water source for miles, Hyena Pan Tented Camp takes you to a wild corner of Botswana.

The camp is located on the pristine Khwai Private Reserve, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve and the fertile Khwai River in the south, and Chobe National Park in the east, making it a popular gathering point for the wildlife in the region.

You will be amongst the action whilst staying at Hyena Pan, with wildlife coming to join you at the watering holes

You’ll be set in the midst of all the action as the mineral-rich waters of the Hyena Pan attract hordes of wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, African wild dogs, buffalos, impalas, zebra, waterbucks, kudu, roans and red lechwes.

Hyena Pan Tented Camp perches over this spectacle, and you only need to open your tent and walk out to see splashing elephants, grazing antelopes and lurking lions.

While you don’t really need to leave your tent to experience first-class wildlife viewing, the camp offers morning and afternoon game drives through the private concession along the Khwai River and game walks with exceptional guides.

There’s also a ground-level hide near the waterhole, where keen photographers can snap the perfect picture.

If you prefer to get an elevated view, you can spend the morning or afternoon in the five-metre-high elevated platform overlooking the waterhole. You can even spend the night at the platform with Skybeds, a romantic experience where you’ll fall asleep under the stars to the sounds of Botswana’s animals.

The Camp

Hyena Pan Tented Camp has eight solar-powered tents raised on wooden platforms. They all feature comfortable twin beds that can be made into doubles, en-suites with indoor showers, and private verandahs.

While the tents are a cosy retreat, the dining deck, lounge area, and splash pool are also fantastic spots to watch over the busy waterhole. Relax in the open-air boma with a cool drink, and watch the bush come alive after dark as the waterhole becomes illuminated.

Facilities

A splash pool, a photographer's hide, a lounge and dining areas.

Dining

You’ll stay at Hyena Pan Tented Camp on a full-board basis, with tasty meals served on the dining deck.

How this camp makes your trip more responsible

The camp is completely solar-powered, except for the showers, which run on a gas geyser pumping hot water to the tents. The camp is part of the Natural Selection group, which supports a number of environmental projects in the Khwai Area. They’ve partnered with the Botswana Predator Conservation Trust to preserve the leopard population in the region and have also teamed up with Round River Conservation Studies to collect important data on large herbivores for the reserve’s game monitoring and conservation project.
