Spend a wild night under the stars at Skybeds, one of Botswana’s most extraordinary safari experiences

Located within the pristine wilderness of the Khwai Private Reserve, Skybeds is a truly extraordinary camp. The ‘rooms’ are five-metre high platforms, overlooking the game-rich Khwai plains and the Hyena Pan, the only permanent water source for miles.

Hordes of animals gather around the mineral-rich waters of the pan, including elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, African wild dogs, buffalo, hyenas, impalas, zebras, waterbucks, kudus, roan and red lechwes.

The waterhole becomes illuminated at night, so you can keep watch for splashing elephants, lurking lions and prowling hyenas all night. And while your attention may be focused on the ground, you’ll also have a spectacular view above, with a blanket of millions of twinkling stars.

The Skybeds are open from 1st April to 30th November and must be booked in combination with a stay at Hyena Pan or Sable Alley camps. The opening period runs through the dry season, and although the daytime temperatures are hot, the evenings are quite cold.

Each Skybed platform comes equipped with a cosy stack of duvets and blankets, and hot water bottles, and you’ll relish the chance to sleep under the fresh open air.

Romantic and private, the Skybeds are perfect for adventurous couples or honeymooners looking for a magical safari experience. With three platforms sleeping six people, the Skybeds is also a great option for small groups; however, children must be aged 15 years and above.

The Lodge

There are three intimate, five-metre high Skybeds platforms, spaced far apart, so you’ll feel like the only people in the world, with just the stars and the animals for company. The upper platform is the alfresco platform, featuring a large, plush bed and a billowing white canopy. The lower platform holds the private bathroom with an enclosed shower and flushing toilet.  Delicious meals and drinks are served around the cosy campfire on the dining platform, and the staff can even provide hot water bottles to keep you warm on cooler nights.

Facilities

Dining platform, private bathrooms, indoor showers, and an illuminated waterhole.

Dining

You’ll stay at Skybeds on a full-board basis, with meals and drinks served on the dining platform.

How this lodge makes your trip more responsible

Skybeds is part of Hyena Pan Tented Camp and the Natural Selection group, which supports a number of projects in the Khwai Area. They’ve partnered with the Botswana Predator Conservation Trust to preserve the leopard population in the region and have also teamed up with Round River Conservation Studies to collect important data on large herbivores for the reserve’s game monitoring and conservation project.
