Perfect For

Couples, honeymoons, solo

Bisate Lodge is run by the luxury operator, Wilderness Safaris. With unique architecture you will set perched in a natural amphitheatre of volcanic rock with views out across Bisoke and Karisimbe Volcanoes. Dubbed one of Wildernesses ‘premium properties’ you will enjoy perfect luxury and fantastic service and attention to detail throughout.

The word ‘Bisate’ translates to pieces, as the lodge is situated in an extinct volcanic cone that has been eroded away into pieces! The lodge is well located just a 20-minute drive from the park HQ allowing for a great high-end base for your gorilla or golden monkey trekking.

Six opulent en-suite Forest Villas are warmed by a central fireplace and have breath-taking views from the deck. The main area comprises a lounge, dining and bar area, wine cellar and viewing deck. Both the architecture and interiors are rooted in Rwandan cultural traditions.

The aim of Bisate is to be a model of sustainable ecotourism in Rwanda. Its reforestation and rehabilitation project has each guest partnering with them in contributing to conservation and local community upliftment, with a positive impact on the iconic endangered mountain gorilla. The design of the rooms is based on the Kings Palace, however the thatch is created from recycled plastic making it more durable and insulated – perfect for those colder winter months!

This idyllic lodge is perfect for any high end traveller looking to experience a great eco-friendly lodge whilst enjoying the once in a lifetime experience of gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

The Lodge

Bisate offers 6 opulent forest villas, all are en-suite and offer fantastic views across the neighboring volcanoes. The rooms consist of a small cloakroom that opens up on to a lounge and bedroom area. The interior design is very modern with a wonderful Rwanda twist. The rooms can all be double, or twin and the lounge has a day bed and large fire place for those colder evenings. The bathrooms are very spacious with shower and free-standing bathtub. Every villa has its own private balcony to enjoy the stunning views.

The main area is built in the same style as the villas, consisting of three ‘nests’ with the lounge on one side the dining room on the other and the reception area in the centre. The restaurant area has an indoor and outdoor seating area. A wine cellar has been built beneath the restaurant, with wine tastings an additional feature of the lodge. There is a library with one of the world’s largest private collections of primate reference books. In the library there is also a television, which is used for showing nature documentaries.

Activities

The main activities offered from here are focused in the National Park, with gorilla trekking and golden monkey trekking being the main highlight. In room massages are offered and much needed after long treks!

Dining

Meals are mainly a la carte and to a very high standard. With some great options available enjoy your meals in the main dining area. There are no strict mealtimes and guests are encouraged to be as relaxed as they wish.

Why Wayfairer

We aim to work with hotels and lodges that are committed to helping their local communities. Many of the staff at Bisate are from the local community and have been involved in the lodge since the building process. Wilderness Safaris have always shown a strong focus on sustainability and conservation, the lodge has been planned to be as sustainable as possible, for example, the collection of rainwater, which is filtered then used as grey water for toilets and showers. Water for drinking is pumped from the mountain springs, then purified and filtered, with guests offered reusable drinking bottles so as to reduce the wastage of plastic water bottles.
