Hoodia Desert Lodge does things a little differently to other lodges in the Namib-Naukluft region and welcomes you to explore this diverse location and certainly one of the highlights of Namibia in more detail and at a slower pace.
With more and more lodges becoming part of larger chain and multinationals, Hoodia Desert Lodge, first opened in 2008 has managed to retain its identity and friendly owner-run style that offers every traveller a personal and tailored experience.
The lodge is away from the hustle and bustle of the Sesriem area which is also contains the main gate into the National Park and down to the famous dunes and pans of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, however it is still only a 30 minute from the gate. Named after a type of flowering cactus common to the areas, Hoodia is nestled in beautiful surroundings on the banks of the ephemeral (but normally dry) Tsauchab River.
What makes a stay at Hoodia different to all the other nearby lodges is the approach they have taken to visiting the world-famous sand dunes. Most lodges will attempt to reach the sand dunes as early as possible racing down to the gate and joining the queue to enter before joining, normally, many other vehicles and guests at the dunes themselves as everyone tends to arrive at roughly the same time. Hoodia, however, have made this more of an experience which starts after breakfast from the lodge before entering the national park. The guide will then take you on a short walk to look for the lizards, beetles, spiders, snakes and birdlife which call this arid environment home. The guide then continue further down the track towards the dunes and enters the Tsauchab River bed while explaining further about the environment, it is then a hike to Deadvlei and later Sosssuvlei is using a ‘secret route’ to minimise seeing other people. Next enjoy a coffee/tea break and some snacks before making your way to towards “Elim Dune” on the way out of the park to enjoy a generous “Out of Africa” style picnic lunch. Visit Sesriem Canyon in the afternoon before returning to the lodge at around 15:30-16:00.
