Explore Namibia's famous sand dunes of the Namib-Naukluft from the luxurious Hoodia Desert Lodge

Cost Per Night
Perfect For

Perfect for Couples, Adults (children over age 12 are welcome) & Honeymooners

Hoodia Desert Lodge does things a little differently to other lodges in the Namib-Naukluft region and welcomes you to explore this diverse location and certainly one of the highlights of Namibia in more detail and at a slower pace.

With more and more lodges becoming part of larger chain and multinationals, Hoodia Desert Lodge, first opened in 2008 has managed to retain its identity and friendly owner-run style that offers every traveller a personal and tailored experience.

The lodge is away from the hustle and bustle of the Sesriem area which is also contains the main gate into the National Park and down to the famous dunes and pans of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, however it is still only a 30 minute from the gate. Named after a type of flowering cactus common to the areas, Hoodia is nestled in beautiful surroundings on the banks of the ephemeral (but normally dry) Tsauchab River.

What makes a stay at Hoodia different to all the other nearby lodges is the approach they have taken to visiting the world-famous sand dunes. Most lodges will attempt to reach the sand dunes as early as possible racing down to the gate and joining the queue to enter before joining, normally, many other vehicles and guests at the dunes themselves as everyone tends to arrive at roughly the same time. Hoodia, however, have made this more of an experience which starts after breakfast from the lodge before entering the national park. The guide will then take you on a short walk to look for the lizards, beetles, spiders, snakes and birdlife which call this arid environment home. The guide then continue further down the track towards the dunes and enters the Tsauchab River bed while explaining further about the environment, it is then a hike to Deadvlei and later Sosssuvlei is using a ‘secret route’ to minimise seeing other people. Next enjoy a coffee/tea break and some snacks before making your way to towards “Elim Dune” on the way out of the park to enjoy a generous “Out of Africa” style picnic lunch. Visit Sesriem Canyon in the afternoon before returning to the lodge at around 15:30-16:00.

The lodge

Hoodia Desert Lodge is a stylish option in the Namib-Naukluft area, it feels high quality without feeling overly pretentious. It would suit any traveller looking for a personal and more detailed exploration of the area and for honeymooners we recommend chalet number 1 for the best sunset view. The only consideration is that the full-day Sossusvlei excursion Hoodia carries out is a long day and can be tiring so for those who are looking for a shorter half-day visit to the dunes, they might be able to adapt the activity or we can look at other options such as Dead Valley Lodge or Kulala Desert Lodge perhaps.

The lodge itself has eleven thatched, partly tented chalets spread out on either side of the main area, all with fantastic views of the dry riverbed and the plains beyond. We particularly like the indoor and outdoor bathrooms, the former containing a shower, two hand basins and a toilet and the latter a wonderful open-air bath and shower. Inside the tents are roomy with air-conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities, a refrigerator and a mosquito net around the bed.

The main area has a substantial lounge with lots of personal touches from the owners and artwork they have collected over the years and which gives it a really homely feel. The restaurant, below the lounge, leads out to an outside terrace which is the perfect spot for making the most of the views with a gin and tonic in hand.

The facilities at Hoodia Desert Lodge include a spacious lounge, restaurant and viewing deck, eleven thatched chalet, a swimming pool and personal, attentive an friendly staff

Hoodia Desert Lodge offers consistently delicious food in a wonderful setting. Breakfast is normally a buffet and light lunches are available or included as part of the Sossusvlei excursion. Dinner is normally served with well-chosen South Africa wines and is normally a set menu.

Why Wayfairer

The guides at Hoodia Desert Lodge are some of the best that we have come across and really bring to life the arid Namib Desert. Although "living desert tours" where guides work to extract and otherwise disrupt delicate desert-dwelling creatures are not something we normally recommend, Hoodia's guides do so with the upmost respect without any harm to the animal itself. By showing guests these fascinating organisms they foster a greater understanding, appreciation and care that hopefully guests will pass on and remember for a long time.
