Families & Couples
One of five lodges in the Onguma Collection within the private Onguma Reserve, Onguma Bush Camp is the most family-friendly option and it is our preferred option for families on this side of the park.
For something a little more upmarket the stunning new Onguma Camp Kala is a wonderful option.
The Onguma Reserve itself borders the Etosha National Park on the far eastern side, it is 34,000ha of prime wildlife viewing habitat.
Activities include exploring the private reserve either by foot or in a vehicle as well as heading into the main national park through the eastern Von Lindequist Gate, which is just a short distance from the entrance to the Onguma Reserve. It is therefore a well-positioned base for those looking to utilise the services of the professional guides at the lodge or to venture into the national park under their own steam.
Onguma Bush Camp has 18 rooms of varying styles, from the twin-bedded rondavels to the three family units with two separate bedrooms, a shared bathroom and a small lounge area.
The camp is fenced, aside from 3 deluxe rooms which are in a un-fenced part of the camp, there is a large swimming pool and also a games room to keep children entertained.
For those with very young children it is worth noting that children under 10 are not allowed on game drive vehicles, so you would need to self-drive into the park yourselves if you have children of this age.
Onguma Bush Camp has had a number of extensions and refurbs over the years and it is why it has a number of different of room types. Overall the lodge has an old-world safari style with heavy thatched roofs, directors chairs, heavy wooden furniture and dark leather sofas. It is a comfortable relaxed camp, set in a good deal of space and feels quite buzzy when it is full.
Rooms for families include the two bedroomed family units or the loft rooms, which, as the name suggests, have a loft space accessed by a ladder to a space which fits two single beds for children. Our favourite rooms are the newest deluxe rooms which are in an un-fenced part of the park and overlook the waterhole. They feel a little more separate from the camp and plains game such as black-faced impala and common duiker are often seen at the waterhole.
The waterhole has recently been enlarged and is the focal point for most visitors to the camp, if they can make it past the glistening swimming pool that is. The main area is complete with a dining room and two-tiered lounge with views of the waterhole, the views from the upper level of the lounge are particularly good.
Include a waterhole, swimming pool, children's play area, the camp is mostly fenced so it is family friendly and also has WiFi. Activities include game drives, bush walks, spending time in a hide and even massages are possible.
Individuals tables are set up inside or outside depending on the conditions.
As well as providing a protected private nature reserve of 34,000 ha as a safe haven for local flora and fauna Onguma has run a specific rhino anti-poaching unit. This aims to protect the endangered rhino on the reserve and since it’s inception the incidence of rhino poaching have dropped dramatically.
Onguma also set up the Oshivelo Farming project to create employment for the local community. Unemployment was a real problem around the Etosha region and this 500ha vegetable farm provides permanent employment for 180 workers and another 100 seasonal workers. The farm has become so successful that it has become one of the top five vegetable producers in all of Namibia.
