The Windermere Estate Plantation & Retreat is set amongst 55-acres of cardamom and coffee plantations interspersed with incredibly green patches of rainforest.

The whole region of Munnar is characterised by rolling hills featuring tea plantations and the viridescent Western Ghats rainforest. With cooler temperatures and light breezes across this region, it’s truly a place to escape the incredible cities of India and dive into the country's nature instead.

Rightfully a retreat by name, the Windermere Estate Plantation and Retreat offers guests rest, relaxation and a chance to live the slower pace of Munnar.

Sip a cup of locally sourced tea or coffee on the private verandas, taste some of the local cuisine and the Barn restaurant, or relax in the library or a garden hammock.

Every evening a staff member will guide guests around the estate on a plantation walk, with native trees, birds and butterflies to be spotted along the way.

Listen to knowledge about the local species of flora and fauna, and be entertained by local folklore connected to the biodiversity in the region. Hike up to the viewpoint, perched on a rock in the middle of the property to see the sunrise or sunset over the green hills of Munnar. Wander through the estate gardens to the Boulder, a giant rock estimated to be a few million years old, with an overhang to shade the seating area next to it.

The property

The 18 rooms at Windermere Estate all look out over the garden or valley, and feature private verandas to sip morning tea and hear the sounds of nature waking up. Both the main house and the rooms have been constructed with local granite and recycled wood, so each room is unique. Garden rooms are simple, spacious and have ensuite bathrooms and green views from their verandas. Large windows, grand bedrooms and tastefully furnished, the estate rooms are inspired by traditional plantation houses and offer a relaxed feel, with terracotta floor tiles and an outdoor balcony with a daybed.

Estate rooms are on the first floor of the Windermere Estate and so have even more awe-inspiring vistas than the garden rooms. The Planter Suites are the fanciest rooms on the plantation and are cute, cosy and have breathtaking views of the nearby mountains. The Planter Suites have a separate living room with a dining area, and a balcony for breakfasts or watching sunsets.

Facilities

Facilities and activities at Windermere Estate include birdwatching as a variety of birds can be spotted at the estate, a library filled with books from around the world and daily walks through the Cardamon plantation as the estate.

Dining

There are two restaurants at the plantation; The Barn, an old-fashioned, lavish dining room serving up Indian cuisine, and The Hut, a rustic, more laid back option. No alcohol is served at the Windermere Estate Plantation and Retreat, but guests are welcome to bring their own.

Owned by Dr. Simon, who spent holidays as a child in the region, his love for the area led him to buy the plantation in a poor condition and restore it to the bright green estate it is today. Windermere covers 55-acres of cardamom, coffee and evergreen forest. The Windermere Estate Plantation and Retreat focuses more on relaxation and simplicity than lavish luxury, so while there is no pool or spa, there is friendly and genuine smiles and nature left to bloom under its own devices. The buildings have been constructed with local or recycled materials, and most of the estate’s food is sourced locally.
