Tena Tena is the very first camp opened by Robin Pope and offers a truly authentic safari camp feel from a bygone era when safari goers first started visiting the park. This camp is perfect for those wanting an intimate and exclusive safari experience, paired back decor, with simple yet comfortable African charm.
The Nsefu Sector offers great wildlife sightings from the hundreds of bird species to all the larger African wildlife you expect to see on safari. What differs here is that the camp is built to minimize the effects of man as much as possible and therefore hippo tracks and wildlife avenues are not impeded by the design of the camp itself. It is quite common to see animals pass close by and sometimes though the camp in the evenings and early mornings.
The camp offers simplistic comfort, a sense of ease and peacefulness that one cannot overlook. Tena Tena holds a very special place in the Robin Pope Safari brand’s heart and the pride, love and care can be felt in everything they do here.
As Tena Tena is the only camp in the area, activities are exclusive meaning you get an intimate safari experience when out in the wild and will not have any issues getting another camp’s vehicle in your photo shot or having animals scared away by passing vehicles. Activities here include day and night game drives, walking safaris, village tours, visit to the Wildlife Education Centre and experiencing the local tribal textile trade and markets for authentic local arts and crafts.
Getting to the camp is a wonderful experience in itself and part of your African safari journey. A flight from either Lusaka in Zambia or Lilongwe in Malawi to Mfuwe is needed. You will then take a scenic 1-hour 15minute road transfer from Mfuwe airport to the camp.
Due to the authentic nature of the camp and the ability to be very close to nature and wildlife, Tena Tena welcomes children aged 12 and over.
This exclusive camp boasts five bush suites offering large canvassed rooms and open air bathrooms to take advantage of the sights and sounds of the wild.
A short walk from your room finds you at the open sided dining area where meals are a sociable affair and the meals are prepared with love and will feel like a home away from home, after all, Tena Tena when translated means “temporary home”!
The main area is moulded around a termite mound and shaded by a large mahogany tree, the perfect place to relax and enjoying the wildlife scenes unfolding around you.
The camp offers an outside bar area, game drives, walking safaris, village tours, and market visits.
Dinner is eaten by candlelight either in the dining area or under the stars.
The fully-inclusive rate includes all meals, snacks and alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Some rare or select alcoholic drinks may incur an additional charge.
Robin Pope Safaris supports local people in the area they operate. Staff and guides are trained and given opportunities to work within their brand. It is possible to arrange to visit one of the projects that Project Luangwa supports while on your safari at Tena Tena. These projects include schools, tree planting and the new local library.
