The lodge

Many people will combine Great Fish River Lodge with a Garden Route self-drive trip, often starting in Cape Town making it the perfect, luxury safari ending to a diverse trip. That said the lodge’s location just 160km from Port Elizabeth Airport, which services daily flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, makes it easy to combine with any destination in South Africa or further afield. The private airstrip on the Kwandwe Reserve can then be used for the transfer from Port Elizabeth getting you into the reserve swiftly.

The nine spacious suites at the lodge take a total of 18 guests and even by the standard of South African lodges they feel plush. It is not the place to come for a wild, understated experience but perfect for honeymooners or those looking for a little more comfort and distance on their safari.

There is no need for a mosquito net around the lavish bed, in the malaria-free reserve and an extra bed can be added to the suites should they be required, however the lodge only accepts children over the age of 12. Tones are fresh but muted with indoor and outdoor showers, a free-standing roll-top bath, that overlooks the private plunge pool which sits in the large deck surrounded by some comfy shaded loungers.

Facilities

Facilities include WiFi, private plunge pools, A/C, central lounge and bar, viewing deck and in room spa facilities are available.

Dining

Dining is flexible and can be served on your own private deck, lit by candles in the dining room or under the glittering sky next to a roaring fire in the lodge’s boma.

Why Wayfairer

The Kwandwe Reserve is a real conservation success story which has reclaimed 54,000 acres of farmland as a protected wildlife habitat. In rewilding and repopulating the reserve with native animals many species have been reintroduced to the area such as white and black rhino, cheetah, Cape buffalo and lion as well as smaller cats like serval, wildcat and the small spotted cat. In fact it has been so successful many of the populations across game reserves in South Africa have come from Kwandwe’s stock.
