Hiking Perito Moreno in Argentina. Hiking Perito Moreno is an adventure like no other.

El Calafate, a charming town nestled in the Patagonian region of Argentina, captivates visitors with its stunning natural beauty and unique atmosphere. Situated on the southern shore of Lake Argentino, El Calafate is the gateway to the breathtaking Los Glaciares National Park, home to some of the most impressive glaciers in the world. The town’s streets are lined with cosy cafes, artisanal shops, restaurants serving delicious Patagonian cuisine, and heritage sites like Museo Regional, where you can learn about the area’s history.

One of the town's main attractions is the Perito Moreno Glacier, a colossal ice formation spanning over 250 square kilometres. Guided tours allow tourists to explore the glacier up close by walking on its surface, kayaking adjacent to its icy façade, or navigating the lake’s waters on boat excursions.

Beyond its glacial wonders, El Calafate offers a range of outdoor activities for adventurous travellers. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the pristine landscapes of Los Glaciares National Park, trekking through rugged mountain trails and dense forests while soaking in panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and turquoise lakes. Additionally, you can go horseback riding with a guide who’ll teach you about the ways of the gaucho, mountain biking, and kayaking.

When to go to El Calafate

Summer

In the summer months (December to March), the temperatures can reach around 15 degrees Celsius, and there’s plenty of daylight. It’s also the time of year when the forests are at their greenest, and the vegetation looks lush. However, this is the high season, meaning accommodations and tours get booked early, so keep that in mind when planning a holiday to El Calafate. In February, you can experience the two-week Festival del Lago Argentino, the town’s biggest festival.

Spring

Spring (September and November) is an excellent time to visit El Calafate as the crowds are fewer and temperatures are beginning to warm up.

Autumn

March and April are great months for seeing vibrant autumnal colours. However, the temperatures are beginning to cool.

Winter

The winter months in El Calafate are between June and August. The days tend to be quite cold, with storms and rain. This means visibility will be reduced, so bear that in mind when planning to hike the area. The glaciers might also be challenging to access due to heavy snowfall, and some hotels might be closed.
