Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses is located 12 km north of Kaikoura on New Zealand’s South Island.
Set on an olive grove and deer breeding farm, this luxury ecolodge sits at the foot of the Kaikoura Ranges and looks out over the rugged Pacific Coast.
The renowned surf spot Mangamaunu Bay, on the northern part of the Kaikoura coast, is just 1km to the east.
The lodge itself has four guest suites, each designed to offer stunning views of the surrounding scenery, plus there’s a separate private apartment with three bedrooms and five unique luxury treehouses which allow guests to get closer to the birds, the mountains, the ocean and the sky.
Rates include a generous breakfast and an exquisite three-course evening meal. The menu focuses on local, seasonal foods, and the lodge offers a fantastic selection of New Zealand wine, sourced primarily from small individually owned wineries.
There are endless activities that you can experience from Hapuku Lodge - you can use the lodge’s mountain bikes and explore the local Hapuku trails, learn to surf at Mangamaunu Bay, enjoy either a gentle stroll or a more challenging walk from the lodge, or you can help pick olives (from May-June).
The lodge’s location makes it a fantastic base for exploring Kaikoura and the east coast where you can enjoy whale-watching excursions by boat or air, and you can even swim with wild dusky dolphins in their natural habitat off the Kaikoura coastline.
Guest accommodation comprises of five wooden tree houses which are nestled 10m above the ground in the canopy of a 100 year old Kanuka grove. There are three one-bedroom tree houses, and two family tree houses which feature a master bedroom in the upper branches and a smaller bedroom in the lower branches. The tree houses were designed to blend in with the natural environment and their enormous windows bring the tree canopies into the bedroom offering spectacular views of Kaikoura's dramatic mountains and the distant Pacific Ocean.
There are also four luxury suites within the main lodge which all feature balconies, plus custom-made super-king-sized beds with feather toppers and lambs’ wool mattresses, air-conditioning, a fireplace and under-floor heating, plus en-suite bathroom with a Japanese soaking tub and rain shower. The suites also feature a minibar with complimentary craft beer, juices and local wine. There are also three bedrooms within the spacious Olive House suite. Meals are served in the relaxed open plan dining room in the main lodge. Each morning a continental breakfast buffet and cooked breakfast menu is offered, and each evening a full three-course meal is served, with three choices per course.
The lodge has a 25m solar-heated pool, outdoor hot tub and sauna. Mountain bikes can be used for free. There’s also free WiFi throughout and a Mac for guest use.
Meals are served in the dining room in the main lodge. Guests can expect delicious contemporary cuisine, using locally sourced, seasonal produce, and an excellent selection of New Zealand wine.
The owners of Hapuku Lodge are committed to sustainable and eco-friendly tourism practices. They respect the surrounding environment and they have a commitment to plant a tree for every guest that stays at the lodge – so far more than 17,000 trees have been planted.
More than 75% of the ingredients and products used at the lodge are sourced from local farmers and fishermen, and they use seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs from the lodge’s organic garden. The lodge is committed to recycling and their aim is to reduce, recycle and compost with a goal of becoming a zero-waste community.
