Families (children over 8 years), Couples & Honeymoons
Jacana Camp is set on a small, palm-fringed island in the permanent wetlands of the private Jao Reserve in the heart of the Okavango Delta.
This classic Okavango Delta 'water camp' is surrounded by water all year which means that guests can enjoy activities such as relaxing boat trips and slow-paced game viewing excursions by mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) year round, with 4WD game drives an option during the summer months (typically September to May) when the floodwaters recede.
Wildlife concentrations depend on the water levels and therefore change from season to season, however thriving populations of hippo, elephant, buffalo and crocodile are found here year round, and the camp is set in one of the most densely populated wetland areas for sitatunga and red lechwe.
In the dry season zebra and wildebeest abound, attracting predators like leopard, lion and cheetah. It is also a fantastic bird-watching destination and many species of birdlife, including the Pels Fishing Owl and greater and lesser Jacanas, can be spotted along the winding waterways.
Jacana’s five ‘Meru’ style tents and its main building, which features a bar, lounge and dining area, are set on elevated wooden decks providing endless views of the picturesque floodplains and waterways, and this relaxed, laid-back camp offers guests a perfect opportunity to appreciate the wilderness, scenery and spectacular wildlife and birdlife of the Okavango.
With its incredible location, lush, tropical scenery, exciting water-based activities, excellent wildlife viewing, and friendly and efficient staff, Jacana Camp can be a fantastic addition to your tailor-made Botswana holiday!
Accommodation comprises of five luxurious ‘Meru’ style tents (including a two bedroom family tent), each set on a raised wooden deck offering breathtaking views over the Okavango Delta's western floodplains.
The spacious and beautifully decorated tents feature large comfortable beds with mosquito nets, two wicker chairs and a table, wooden flooring, ceiling fans and mosquito coils which are lit at night by the staff. The canvas tents have floor to ceiling windows on either side of the bedroom which makes them exceptionally light and airy, and offers an opportunity to spot wildlife from your bed! All tents are en-suite with flush toilets, double sinks, and showers – and although the bathroom is enclosed it is roofless allowing for showers under the African sky.
The camp’s main building is set on an elevated wooden deck between two sycamore fig trees and is surrounded by dense wild date palms. The building is on two levels – there’s a cosy bar and relaxing lounge downstairs, and behind the bar there’s an area with a firepit which is a popular place for pre-dinner drinks, whilst the main dining area is upstairs offering spectacular views of the surrounding floodplains. Jacana Camp also has a plunge pool which is perfect for cooling off from the midday sun, plus there’s a gazebo with hammocks - ideal for a nap in between safari activities.
Facilities include a plunge pool surrounded by sun loungers and umbrellas, a two-storey main building with lounge, bar and dining areas, a small library, a central firepit, a gift shop, and laundry services.
Meals are served in the main dining area overlooking the floodplains. Guests can watch the sun rise over the Okavango Delta at breakfast and enjoy a delicious evening meal around the campfire under the African stars.
Jacana Camp is owned by Wilderness Safaris, an ecotourism operator dedicated to conserving and restoring Africa’s wilderness and wildlife. Wilderness Safaris have numerous camps situated in pristine wilderness areas, however they ensure that they design and build their camps in a way which has minimal impact on the environment – if they need to be moved in future, they will leave no trace that they were ever there.
Jacana Camp works with Pack for a Purpose, an initiative which Wayfairer is also proud to support, and they encourage their guests to use a small amount of space in their luggage to pack supplies needed by local community projects.
