The area supports a variety of wildlife, including buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, reedbuck and impala, and it’s renowned for its epic sightings of endangered African wild dogs. The reserve is also an excellent bird-watching destination, and various species of birdlife can be spotted throughout the year, depending on water levels and season.

Located in the southern Okavango, Chitabe Camp receives very little water. Therefore, activities are strictly land-based. You can enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in open-sided safari vehicles to spot the rich wildlife of the Chitabe area, plus there’s also the option of sunset drives for a chance to see nocturnal creatures.

Walking safaris with skilled guides are also possible and offer an opportunity to spot big game on foot, as well as observe the small animals that you might miss when travelling by vehicle.

After an exciting day of safari activities, you can relax at this luxurious camp. You may wish to take a refreshing dip in the plunge pool or enjoy a G&T on the verandah of your stylish Meru-style tent and take in the magnificent views over the Okavango Delta's floodplains.

Wayfairer Tip: Combine Chitabe Camp with a ‘water camp’ such as Jacada for the ultimate Okavango experience.

The Camp

The eight spacious and individually-decorated tents are furnished with comfortable twin or double beds surrounded by mosquito nets, bedside tables and lamps, a writing desk, a luggage rack, and a soft chair and footstool, and each tent features stunning photographs of the Okavango Delta’s wildlife taken by camp owner Dave Hamman. All tents are en-suite with flush toilets, double sinks, and indoor and outdoor showers. Each tent has its own private deck where you can sit and relax whilst listening to the birds in the surrounding trees and watching the wildlife, including elephants and giraffes, wander by the camp.

Raised wooden walkways connect the tents to the camp’s main thatched building, which has a lovely lounge and bar with comfortable sofas, and an open-sided dining area where you can take in the spectacular views of the floodplains whilst enjoying a hearty breakfast, buffet lunch or delicious three-course dinner. Below the dining room, there’s a plunge pool which is surrounded by a deck with comfortable sun loungers making it an ideal place to relax in-between safari activities, and along a walkway from the main building, there’s a small library, nestled in the branches of a large tree, which is a perfect spot to sit and read or simply gaze out at the wonderful views. There’s also a small gift shop selling traditional crafts and baskets made by the staff.

Facilities

Facilities include a plunge pool surrounded by sun loungers, a thatched main building with a lounge, a bar and dining areas, a central firepit, a small library, a gift shop, and laundry services.

Dining

Guests can enjoy an early breakfast before heading out on game drives, and later in the morning, a substantial brunch is served. Afternoon tea is offered before the afternoon activity, and a delicious dinner is served in the evenings.

How this resort makes your trip more responsible

Chitabe Camp is owned by Wilderness Safaris, an ecotourism operator dedicated to conserving and restoring Africa’s wilderness and wildlife. Wilderness Safaris have an objective to reduce energy consumption and fuel use at all its camps, and Chitabe Camp is 100% solar-powered, with electricity and hot water provided via solar panels and inverters. Waste water (sewage and grey water) is treated in an above-ground sewage plant, which ensures that the water is clean before being allowed to enter the natural environment.  Guests are given the opportunity to take a tour of the solar farm and find out more about their eco-friendly practices.
