Where they went, what they did and what they saw in Kenya

by Kat MacLeod

Derek & Colleen booked their honeymoon with Wayfairer years ago. Then Covid arrived, they welcomed a new baby to their family and finally, in 2022, they set off to Kenya to enjoy the safari of a lifetime!

“We were very happy to have had Wayfairer plan and organize our honeymoon. They worked with us through the pandemic and the birth of our daughter to reschedule and finally make this amazing trip happen. They chose amazing hosts and venues for our trip and this was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” – Derek Ersbek

Here’s where they went, where they stayed and what they got upto on their Kenya honeymoon…

DAY ONE

When Derek & Colleen landed in Nairobi early in the morning they checked into The Boma Hotel for the night, then powered on through their jetlag and spent the afternoon exploring the city’s highlights, including a trip to the Giraffe Centre in Karen.

DAY TWO

After a good night’s sleep they began the 4.5hr drive to Kenya’s highlands after breakfast, arriving at The Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages in Laikipia in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive which they concluded with a sundowner on the plains. In the shadow of Mt Kenya, Africa’s second highest mountain, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is an example of one of many award-winning conservation programs in East Africa.

DAYS THREE & FOUR

Derek & Colleen spent their days game driving and seeing lions, elephants, buffalo and even cheetah. They also visited the Northern White Rhinos; the last two left in existence. Click here to read more about the incredible Northern White Rhino project that Ol Pejeta has undertaken. Their stay at Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages included a private vehicle, so they were completely on their own schedule and spent as much or as little time on safari as they liked.

DAY FIVE

They left Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages bound for the Masai Mara. Their light aircraft flight drifted over the iconic Mara plains before landing them at a dirt airstrip in the middle of the bush. They were picked up by their guide from Basecamp Eagle View, and checked in in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive.

DAY SIX

Early in the morning, they left camp in the dark to take part in a famous Masai Mara event; a sunrise hot air balloon flight. As Derek and Colleen travelled at the end of July, in the middle of the great migration so from the air they saw the millions of migrating wildebeest spread across the open plains. They landed to a champagne breakfast and spent the rest of the day game driving and seeing lions, elephants, hippos and more. They even spotted a leopard!

DAY SEVEN

After a whirlwind Masai Mara safari the happy couple flew to Kenya’s white sand coast for some much-needed R&R. They spent a whole glorious week at Kinondo Kwetu, which is a little off the tourist trail and enjoyed the lodge’s easy going, barefoot luxury approach to beach life. They explored the coast, enjoyed a romantic dinner at Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant and when it cam time to fly home again they left with sun-kissed, salty skin and happy memories of their Kenya Honeymoon.
