You can visit El Chaltén all year round, but here’s our advice according to the seasons.

Winter

Winter (May-September) in this region presents a unique set of challenges and charms. During this period, many hotels and transportation links may be closed. However, the landscape transforms with the arrival of snow, which falls in moderate quantities, creating a picturesque winter wonderland.

The temperature hovers around 3 degrees Celsius during the day, providing a crisp and chilly atmosphere. However, the nights can be considerably colder, with temperatures dropping to around -4 degrees Celsius. One notable impact of the snowfall is the potential for trails to become inaccessible.

Summer

El Chaltén experiences a high summer season from December to February, attracting a surge of international travelers. Due to the limited accommodation spaces, booking your trip well in advance is advisable to secure your stay.

January marks the peak of summer. However, visitors should be prepared for rain and lower temperatures, particularly at night. March and April signal the end of the summer vacations and the beginning of autumn. Locals have typically returned to school, and the days grow shorter, and temperatures become slightly colder. The hiking trails are now less busy, offering a more serene experience. The winds also tend to calm down, providing a more pleasant outdoor environment.

Spring & Autumn in El Chaltén

El Chaltén experiences delightful shoulder seasons in April and November, marked by fewer crowds and lower prices. During these months, the landscape comes alive with vibrant leaf colors, creating a picturesque backdrop for exploration.
