Hot springs, mountains covered in forest, and epic views of Mount Fuji - explore Hakone your way

Hakone_Pixabay_CCPen_Ash-ge32bebeb6_1280_fmulpa-1 We recommend exploring the volcanic landscape of Hakone

Hakone is a peaceful respite from hectic Tokyo, with plenty to see and do in Japan’s great outdoors. Gaze up at the peak of one of Japan’s biggest symbols and breathe in the fresh mountain air.

It is a part of the Fuji-Hakone National Park, which boasts hot springs, Lake Ashinoko, and potential views of Mount Fuji. The efficient transport system lets you explore easily by train, bus, funicular, cable car, or boat.

Amid lush forests, Fuji-san's snowy cap, and rejuvenating onsen baths, Hakone provides a refreshing contrast to Japan's urban hustle. Attractions include boiling eggs in volcanic waters, pirate ship cruises on Lake Ashi, outdoor sculpture parks, and quaint villages. Keep your camera ready for glimpses of Mount Fuji, especially in the drier winter.

When to go to Hakone

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Hakone when the countryside is lit up in the pinks of cherry blossoms (April) and the warm reds and oranges of falling leaves (October and November). However, in winter, nothing beats the feeling of sitting in a nice warm onsen bath, even though you’re outside in the snow!
