As the Selinda Spillway winds through the wilderness to the Linyanti, Selinda Camp rests just on the riverbank where the two meet. It is the upmarket sister camp to Selinda Explorers , and with bubbling river surrounds and an expanse of 130,000 hectares of Selinda Reserve to call home, this safari camp is the embodiment of remoteness in nature.
The reserve itself is known as not only one of the best wildlife-watching destinations in Botswana but also the whole of Africa (if not, the world), due to the diversity and high concentrations of rare species.
Elephants traipse through the Riverlands by the thousands, the critically endangered African wild dogs are in abundance here, whilst the Selinda Lion Pride is a somewhat celebrity family, having been featured in National Geographic’s “Birth of a Pride” – a film by Dereck and Beverly Joubert.
The camp itself has been designed to echo the historic thatched warrior village of Sangwali, which famous explorer David Livingstone encountered on his travels around southern Africa.
Fitting for the location, inspiration has also been taken from the elements: the arrival to the camp by boat and the blues of the swimming pools for water, the billowing silks and swinging hammocks swayed by grassland breezes for air, the farm-to-table meals made using homegrown produce for the Earth, with the quartet completed each evening with a cosy communal campfire.
Participate in daily activities ranging from traditional game drives to bespoke birdwatching excursions by boat; whether you’d like to explore the treasures of the Selinda Reserve on foot, on four wheels, or simply following the currents of the Linyanti – the choice is yours.
Selinda Camp’s three spacious thatched tents all feature a private deck or terrace, large en-suite bathrooms and a private plunge pool. Yet, each tent is unique and designed to feel like a true explorer’s camp, with hammocks, a rope and salvaged wood harking back to the Livingstone era. There is also an additional Selinda Suite, which has two bedrooms. By booking this room, you’ll experience the most exclusive of safari treatments; your own private entrance, vehicle, safari guide, butler and chef.
Swimming pools, a lounge and campfire area, game drives and safari activities, plus in-room massages.
A stay at Selinda Camp is full board, and all meals are created from ingredients homegrown or sourced locally.
Selinda Camp is part of the Great Plains Conservation group, which runs a conservation education programme at schools, as well as women’s craft groups in the Gudigwa and Seronga areas. To donate to these causes, you can see a full, up-to-date list of supplies needed to run the progammes on the Pack for a Purpose website under the Selinda Camp name.
