Trip Itinerary

Days 1-2: Cape Town

Day 1 - Collect your keys
View of Cape Town, South Africa

You will be met by a Wayfairer representative upon arrival and collect the keys for your hire car. Before your arrival, you will receive a digital copy of a detailed set of driving directions, a list of emergency contact numbers and a sat-nav system.

Your self-drive journey will begin with a short drive to your Waterfront hotel where you stay for 2 nights on a bed and breakfast basis. We recommend a bed and breakfast basis so that you get the chance to experience Cape Town's incredible food and drink scene.

Day 2 - Explore Cape Town

Your property is located in the V&A Waterfront which incredibly family friendly, has some amazing restaurants and is a great base to explore Cape Town's top attractions. Cape Town is a mind-blowing city nestled under the shadow of Table Mountain, a short drive to beaches inhabited by penguins and with a fascinating history. We recommend a half day city tour to ensure you get the chance to see the city through the eyes of a local guide. Our team on the ground will ensure you are matched with the perfect guide for your family needs.

Days 3-5: Hermanus

Day 3 - Cape Town > Hermanus
Whale jumping out of water in Hermanus

Following your stay in Cape Town you will wave goodbye to Table Mountain and drive along the coast to Hermanus. Hermanus is the activity hub of the region with whale and shark watching, mountain biking, forest treks, visits to vineyards and many more brilliant family friendly day trips possible.

Day 4 - Activities in Hermanus

There are kilometres of coastline to be explored which are fronted by pristine forests with some of our favourite nature treks on the continent. This is where having a hire car comes into its own and the freedom to explore at your own pace is by far the best way to see this region. Seafood is on the menu here and this is the site where some of Africa's first settlers set up their cottages to make the most of the bountiful oceans.

Day 5 - Activities in Hermanus

With three nights in Hermanus you will be able to enjoy the comforts of your hotel and make the most of the activities. As with Cape Town, we can arrange for guided day trips and boat trips in search of the incredibly abundant marine life. From June-November this is the breeding ground for super-pods of Southern Right Whales. However, travel at any time of year and you will be spoilt with amazing activities on land and sea.

Days 6-7: Plettenberg Bay

Day 6 - Hermanus > Plettenberg Bay
Robberg, Garden Route, Plettenberg, South Africa

Today, you will drive inland through some stunning vineyards and vast mountainous landscapes as you make your way to Plettenberg Bay. Rejoining the coast at Mossel Bay you will have the chance to stop off at one of the lovely restaurants in the harbour before winding your way along the coastal route to your beautiful property tucked away in a luscious forest. Again, you stay on a bed and breakfast basis to make the most of the restaurants in the surrounding area and because you may be out on day trips over lunch.

Day 7 - Plettenberg Bay

There is a reason locals visit this stretch of coast on their own family holidays. Plettenberg Bay backs onto 'Nature's Valley' as the beachfront meets the forest. A huge open air bird sanctuary, reptile sanctuary, primate research centre, bungee jumping, horse riding and many more activities are available.

Days 8-10: Kwandwe Game Reserve

Day 8 - Plettenberg Bay > Kwandwe Game Reserve

Today you will enjoy breakfast before departing on the four hour drive to the amazing Kwandwe Game Reserve - another lovely coastal drive. You will be met by your guide at the gate of the reserve and switch vehicles into the lodge's 4x4 Land Cruiser. Kwandwe is renowned for brilliant scenery, 'big 5' game viewing and fantastic family-friendly accommodation. You will be staying on a full board basis whilst on safari with meals taken either at the lodge or as a picnic out on safari.

Day 9 - On safari

Activities at Kwandwe include the traditional morning, afternoon and night drives exploring the beautiful reserve and the vast array of wildlife within. The reserve has large numbers of elephant, lion, leopard, black and white rhino and giraffe as well as hundreds of other species. We also recommend taking the opportunity to enjoy a bush walk. This is a great chance to learn about the smaller species that inhabit the reserve.

Day 10 - On safari

Your final full day should be spent as you wish. Soaking in the sounds, smell and landscapes of the bush from you deck is sometimes just as rewarding as a game drive. With brilliant service and fantastic kids activities on offer we will make sure the whole family is looked after.

Day 11: Fly home

Day 11 - Fly home

This morning you will enjoy a hearty breakfast before being driven back to your vehicle with a last chance to glimpse Africa's stunning flora and fauna. You will then drive 1 hour to Port Elizabeth for a domestic flight to Cape Town before connecting onto your international flight.
