Why We Love It

The history of Hotel des Mille Collines makes this property unique in Rwanda. It has stood the test of time and many staff were on site protecting people during the 1994 genocide. The location is perfect for exploring the city.

Not only are the facilities excellent, but the hotel has a history and it’s possibly Rwanda’s most famous hotel. The Hotel des Mille Collines was Rwanda's first grand’ hotel to enter the country back in 1973 and the inspiration for the Hollywood Blockbuster ‘Hotel Rwanda’.

The film is based on a true story when back in 1994 the European staff were evacuated and manager Paul Rusesabagina opened the hotel as a refuge from the fighting outside.

Thanks to the efforts of Rusesabagina, 700 people were saved from the genocide that swept through the country and many of the initial pleas for international help came through the fax line that militia had failed to cut.

Today, Hotel des Mille Collines remains a draw to people seeing refuge and offers excellent views over the city and nearby hills of Kigali. With 112 rooms and suites, you can choose to have views of the bustling city or manicured garden.

The hotel offers a long outdoor swimming pool to relax by after trekking, three restaurants to sample some of the local Rwandan cuisine and easy walking access to most of Kigali’s important sights. Thanks to its history the Hotel des Mille Collines is one of Rwanda’s most revered and desired hotels.

How this hotel makes your trip more responsible

Hotel des Mille Collines has an incredible history, and its success as a hotel today and the incredible actions of the staff in the past is why Wayfairer offers this property to customers. The hotel filed for bankruptcy back in 2005, but today is a shining monument in Kigali to show sanctity of life and how one person can really make a difference.
