Trip Itinerary
Days 1-4: Masai Mara
Day 1 - Transfer from Nairobi to Masai Mara
You will be met on arrival at Nairobi International Airport by our VIP meet and greet service. A representative will escort you through immigration and customs to your driver, who will transfer you to the Nairobi domestic airport for your light aircraft flight west to the Masai Mara. Light aircraft flights are great adventures in their own right, and if you're lucky, you can even spot wildlife from the air as you fly in.
You will be met on arrival at your airstrip in the Masai Mara and a representative from Saruni Mara, where you will spend your next 4 nights. After lunch, you can venture into the bush on your first safari activity as you begin your search for Africa's iconic Big 5.
Day 2 - 4 - Explore the Masai Mara
Enjoy your first full day on safari in the Masai Mara, a world-renowned wildlife reserve and one of the best 'Big 5' safari regions in all of Africa. The Masai Mara is a fantastic option for first-timers, migration followers, and experienced safari lovers alike. Saruni Mara includes shared day game drives and nature walks as the core safari activities. On top of these classic activities, Saruni Mara offers a wide range of extras, including cultural village tours, hot air balloon rides and much more. These are all wonderful optional extras that our friendly Africa team would be happy to arrange to personalise for your safari experience.
The Mara is a fantastic year-round safari destination with especially clear game viewing in the long dry season from July to October and beautiful touches of green to the scenery in the shoulder and rainy seasons. The Great Migration typically occurs in the Masai Mara during the long dry season, making this a traditionally excellent time to go on holiday in Kenya.
An interesting fact about the Masai Mara is that it contains one of the highest densities of lions anywhere in the world, and yet you can see the Maasai tribesmen grazing their cattle in the surrounding land. You'll gain first-hand insight into the conflict that occurs between humans and wildlife as cattle and predators roam side by side.
Days 5-6: Stone Town
Day 5 - Fly to Zanzibar and transfer to Stone Town
This morning, you have time for your early morning walking safari or game drive before you leave Saruni Mara and head back to the airstrip in time for your scheduled light aircraft flight. You'll arrive in Nairobi in the early afternoon, where you'll be met and transferred to one of our favourite nearby restaurants to have lunch and relax. In the afternoon, you'll be driven to Nairobi's international airport for your direct flight to Zanzibar. You'll be met on arrival at Zanzibar airport and driven the short distance to Stone Town, where you'll stay for two nights at Zanzibar Serena Hotel, in the heart of historic Stone Town with incredible views across the water, on a bed and breakfast basis.
Day 6 - Explore Stone Town
Today, after you have finished breakfast, you will have a free day to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town at your own leisure. A couple of great options we love to recommend are a locally guided walking tour through the maze of alleyways and colourful bazaars, a trip to Prison Island, or a half-day visit to Mnarani Turtle Sanctuary to see the giant tortoise. We can pre-book any tours to ensure you get the most out of your time in Stone Town.
This former spice trading port is filled with a melting pot of cultures with Swahili, Persian, Arabic, European and Indian influences. Discover the ancient stone houses, beautiful mosques, carved wooden doors, and Arabian archways. There are several cultural places of interest, including the Portuguese Fort, the old Dhow Port, the Old Slave Market, the Sultan's Palace, the House of Wonders, Livingstone House, the Hamamni Baths and the Persian Baths of Kidichi.
Days 7-12: Pemba Island
Day 7 - Fly to Pemba Island
This morning, you'll leave after an early breakfast to meet your flight to Pemba Island off the coast of Zanzibar and be transferred to Fundu Lagoon. Hidden within a lush jungle and surrounded by exquisite sea life, this exclusive hideaway provides a luxurious escape from the crowds on an island of idyllic treasures.
You'll adore your stay in one of the 18 tented safari-style bungalows, and you'll spend your mornings waking up to the trilling of birds, the hum of the ocean, or even the sound of cheeky monkeys playing on the terrace.
Days 8 - 12 - Relax and explore Pemba Island
Spend your next 5 days relaxing and enjoying your time on the tropical beaches of Pemba Island, reading a book, lounging on the soft white sand, swimming in the sparkling turquoise waters, or sipping cocktails on the jetty.
Take a stroll along the beach to spot hermit crabs on the shore, or venture out into the ocean to snorkel with colourful shoals of fish and wild dolphins. You can go kayaking, deep-sea fishing, or venture out on a tailored scuba diving excursion around Misali Island.
Roam the beautiful island with a walk along the mangrove coast or a gorgeous sunset dhow cruise. Relax in the hotel with a swim in the infinity swimming pool or pampering at the luxurious Fundu Fusion Spa.
Day 13: Depart from Pemba Island
Day 13 - Depart from Pemba Island
Your Luxury Kenya & Zanzibar Holiday has sadly come to an end. Enjoy a final breakfast this morning at Fundu Lagoon before checking out of your beach resort. You'll be driven to the airport to check in for your flight to Dar Es Salaam to meet your international flight home.
You'll be leaving East Africa with many amazing memories and special stories and a unique appreciation of the wildlife, people, history, culture and stunning natural beauty of Kenya, Zanzibar and the islands.
