This is the only lodge in Ecuador that sits within 3,200-acres of the Mashpi Reserve. Surrounded by the Chocoo-Andean Cloud Forest, Mashpi Lodge offers unrivalled exclusivity and unique wildlife experiences just 3 hours north of Quito.
In fact, Mashpi lies within the Metropolitan District of Quito - Ecuador’s capital city. This is a rare location, neighbouring the Mindo Valley where a transitional state combines tropical and subtropical climates bringing with it a startling variety of flora and fauna that is found nowhere else on our planet.
Staying here brings with it glorious days spent with professional naturalists who are passionate to teach their visitors about this area and it’s otherworldly inhabitants. Trek deep into the cloud forests, follow the tracks of the mysterious cloud leopard, observe birds dressed in electric colours before taking a refreshing plunge in gushing falls.
Mashpi is a small pocket of luxury in untouched wilderness. Each room within the lodge feels as though it is outdoors. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls expose a truly wonderful collage of green to wake up to in the mornings. Just a short amble from bedroom doors is a panoramic terrace designed for birdwatching and listening to the forest orchestra.
In this teeming environment, wildlife is vivid absolutely everywhere. Showcasing pergola-styled roofing, and outdoor seats and tables at the open-air terrace - this is an opportunity to make the most of an immense natural setting. Mashpi Lodge is paradise for nature lovers. It’s an oasis with all the modern comforts.
Within the lodge’s grounds, pay a visit to the Life Centre and eat breakfast on the decking whilst observing tayras, tropical birds and dozens of butterflies feed around you. The hummingbird garden’s 19 species of bird cause a reverberating effect in the air. Climb the observation tower to experience the rainforest at the height of the canopies and pedal through the clouds over a gorge on the Sky Bike built for two.
No stay feels too long at Mashpi Lodge, with so much to see and do in the surrounding wilderness it’s understandable why it’s one of the most accredited lodges in Ecuador.
The lodge and its 24 rooms was built on the only flat area in the Mashpi Reserve, and not a single tree was removed during its construction. The steel beams and glass panels as walls ensure that the rainforest is constantly within view at this special lodge. There are Yaku Suites (family and luxury), Wayra Rooms (standard), and one Wawa Room for solo travellers. Each of the rooms importantly feature floor-to-ceiling walls of glass windows. If you open the window at pretty much any time of day, it’s impossible to miss the sound of birds and frogs.
Facilities include an all-inclusive restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is also a bar; laundry service; a spa offering massages, treatments and a hot-tub; viewing platform; expedition room used by naturalist guides and scientists; laboratory for projects; life centre; WiFi throughout the property.
The food at Mashpi Lodge explores the diverse regions of Ecuador through fresh and local ingredients showcased in gourmet dishes. The flavours of the forest include wild garlic, chillangua and many other organic products. The restaurant is located in the towering Dining Room which is two-stories high and facilitates a lively experience of taste. The bar and the extensive cocktail menu mirrors the exotic environment, executed by expert mixologists.
At Wayfairer we promote sustainable and positive tourism to all our clients who choose to travel with us. This means that all stays actively benefit the countries we visit, and experiences give back to the wildlife and communities we interact with. We only partner with lodges, hotels and tour operators in Ecuador who share our ethos.
Mashpi collaborates with the local community. Through working hand-in-hand with people living in the areas surrounding the reserve, the lodge has implemented a program which means that lodge employees and the communities have become shareholders in the enterprise.
Additionally, Mashpi Lodge offers professional training, English classes and jobs to the people in the local communities. The expert guides today and a team of para-biologists will probably tell you how they worked as hunters, loggers or miners of the same land before the Mashpi project.
