Hacienda Zuleta is a stately setting amongst verdant green vistas. This 17th century historic building was formerly owned by one of Ecuador’s most favourable presidents - Galo Plaza Lasso and his family. Today, this working farm’s community feel and warmth emanates through whitewashed walls out into the cobbled courtyards.
Staying in Hacienda Zuleta is like entering into a bygone era. The bedrooms are adorned with floods of light through wooden framed windows; the President’s Library overflows with literature; gardens and courtyards, blossom fringed and flowering. All of these have been expertly restored to showcase a lodge filled with heritage.
Upon arrival in Ecuador, Zuleta is an ideal place to bed in and adjust to the altitude of the highlands for at least a couple of nights. This is a setting of sheer peace and relaxation, where guests are welcomed in as part of the family.
This personal and special stay provides with it access to the working farm where you can forge a meaningful relationship with Ecuador’s northern highland communities. Journey through the expansive valley on the hacienda’s own breed of horse - known as Zuleteños, and amble along 20 miles of ancient and colonial trails surrounding.
Take a step into the past, and discover the remnants of pre-Inca cultures scattered in the form of mounds and ramp pyramids across the land. Ride by horse-drawn carriage, or speed along on miles of scenic roads by mountain bike, the ways in which you can explore this gorgeous land are endless.
Cultural activities are a fantastic way to fill your day in the highlands. Learn to cook Andean specialities with a local chef, using the handpicked produce from the gardens. Try traditional embroidery techniques taught by a local seamstress.
After long days of adventure and discovery, relax by the fire and experience traditional music and Andean culture. Settle in the warmth and enjoy a night-cap of local potions.
