The Ocean Adventurer is the new name for the Sea Adventurer, given to the boat after a multi-million-dollar renovation in 2017. Originally built, in what was then Yugoslavia, in 1976, it has been kept up to date with several refurbishments in 1999, 2002, and then most recently in 2017. It won the 2017 Travel Weekly Magellan Award for Overall Small Cruise Ship (500 passengers or under) in 2017. This nimble ship, with a cruising speed of 12.5 knots, is one of the faster ships out there, and with its class 1A ice-strengthened hull, it is very capable in the extreme conditions of the Antarctic. With the 2017 renovation comes a contemporary and refreshed look throughout the ship and to each of the 65 cabins. The communal areas include a small gym, a smart dining room, the polar boutique gift shop, a 24-hour library with a host of games and relevant books and the main lounge, which also serves as the lecture hall for presentations and movies. We particularly like the ‘Breezeway’, which is a semi-enclosed passageway running along the outside of the ship, which allows for excellent views while affording some protection from the elements. From a technical point of view, the Ocean Adventurer upgraded to two new Rolls-Royce engines, which significantly increased full efficiency and reduced its carbon footprint.

The Ship

During the re-fit, an additional six new twin cabins and three suites were added to the ship, giving it a total capacity of 128 guests in 65 cabins, plus room for 87 crew members. Triples can be accommodated in the six triple rooms, which include two twin beds and a further third above one of the beds in a bunk bed style. All rooms have a view of the spectacular scenery outside; the size of this view depends on the room, from a porthole window up to the ample windows in the three Owner’s suites. The cabins are fairly functional but very comfortable, and with all the amenities that you should need during a voyage of this type. They all have private en-suite bathrooms, hairdryers, bathrobes, a safe for your valuables, climate control, daily housekeeping and laundry service. The communal areas are welcoming, and during the voyage, you may even be allowed to access the bridge to observe how the captain and the officers sail and navigate the ship. Mail can be posted from the ship for that special memento for a loved one, or perhaps just a reminder to yourself of this remote part of the world. Even phone calls and access to the internet are possible on board, and vouchers can be purchased from reception.

Facilities

The comfortable facilities on board the Ocean Adventurer include a gym, a medical clinic, a well-stocked library, a polar boutique shop, observation decks, and a spacious lounge cum lecture theatre.

Dining

The dining room is located on the upper deck and as it is surrounded by windows you won’t miss a thing. Seating is unreserved and dining takes place in one sitting. Meal times may change due to activities or wildlife sightings but you will always receive three freshly cooked meals a day. There is also a 24-hour beverage station in the lounge.

How this ship makes your trip more responsible

As well as the new, more efficient Rolls-Royce engines fitted to the ship, it burns Marine Gas Oil, which is a clean-burning fuel that conforms to the strict regulations and policies that govern the disposal of waste in this ecologically sensitive area. As well as this, onboard, there are a number of initiatives to make the ship more eco-friendly, including only serving sustainable seafood, using acid-free paper, and each passenger is given a reusable water bottle to use during the voyage.
