Set in 850,000 acres of Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trusts, Sarara Camp offers the perfect platform to explore this vast wilderness. Nestled on the edge of the Matthews mountain range in Northern Kenya, Sarara – meaning ‘meeting place’ – captures the luxury and adventure you can find here
With just six tented suites and the private Loimugi House this camp offers the perfect family friendly getaway into the beautiful culture and wildlife you will find in this successful conservation story that is Namunyak.
Each of Sarara’s luxury tents is positioned to maximise the stunning views of the Mathews Range of mountains and the animal watering hole. These tents are spacious and high ceilinged, with plenty of cupboard space, electric lighting and 24 hour hot and cold running water. Sarara has established itself as one of the 'hot spots' for quality leopard viewing in Africa and equally, for close-up sightings of the normally extremely shy lesser kudu antelope. The African wild dogs are frequently encountered in the Sarara valley too.
This is home of the proud Samburu tribes people, a group of semi-nomadic pastoralists who have long shown tolerance for the wildlife that co-exists alongside their cattle.
The conservation work carried out by the Namunyak Trust to date has been hugely successful. As a result of the severe ivory poaching crisis of the 70’s and early 80’s there were no recorded elephants remaining in the Mathews Ranges by 1985. Today, several thousand elephants are living and breeding peacefully in the southern Mathews Range area, as well as many other animals calling this area home.
Six very large and beautifully appointed en-suite tents overlook the majestic Mathews Mountain Range and provide a fantastic platform by which to experience this brilliant wildlife conservancy.
The busy camp waterhole is frequented by an array of wildlife, including Elephant, buffalo, Kudu, impala, Leopard, Wild dog and Reticulated Giraffe.
Loimugi House is also on offer, a two bedroom tented family unit that includes a beautiful plunge pool, private dining, its own sitting room and endless views of the Mathews Range. Loimugi house has become famous for its elephant, which are regular visitors to the house pool and offer guests incredibly up close and personal experiences as they come for their water. This is the perfect African wilderness home for families of all ages.
A wide range of activities are available in this desert and mountain landscape, from horse riding to fly camping, and helicopter rides and waterfall hikes – nothing is too much to ask to make the most of your time here. A lovey communal area and pool are ideal for some down time.
To top it off co-owner Katie is a trained chef who ensures food is always top notch, be it in the main lodge setting as you settle in for some communal dining at the captains table, or out under the stars as you enjoy your private dinner surrounded by the raw African night.
Sarara is a true conservation story that we love to tell, the close relationship with the Samburu people is key to the whole success of this lodge. With 60% of the income returning directly in to the community, tourism has become key to the survival of wildlife and people in this area.
