A luxurious 4-star property, with simple but elegant rooms, great location and swimming pool, the Hotel des Mille Collines is one of Kigali’s most popular hotels.
Not only are the facilities excellent, but the hotel has a history and it’s possibly Rwanda’s most famous hotel. The Hotel des Mille Collines was Rwanda's first grand’ hotel to enter the country back in 1973 and the inspiration for the Hollywood Blockbuster ‘Hotel Rwanda’.
The film is based on a true story when back in 1994 the European staff were evacuated and manager Paul Rusesabagina opened the hotel as a refuge from the fighting outside.
Thanks to the efforts of Rusesabagina, 700 people were saved from the genocide that swept through the country and many of the initial pleas for international help came through the fax line that militia had failed to cut.
Today, Hotel des Mille Collines remains a draw to people seeing refuge and offers excellent views over the city and nearby hills of Kigali. With 112 rooms and suites, you can choose to have views of the bustling city or manicured garden.
The hotel offers a long outdoor swimming pool to relax by after trekking, three restaurants to sample some of the local Rwandan cuisine and easy walking access to most of Kigali’s important sights. Thanks to its history the Hotel des Mille Collines is one of Rwanda’s most revered and desired hotels.
Hotel des Mille Collines has 112 rooms, ranging from classic Room with city, garden or panoramic views to spacious suites with separate seating areas. All rooms feature a balcony, comfortable double beds (with garden view rooms also available with two single beds), a desk, bath and complimentary toiletries. All rooms also have access to free WiFi, cable TV and are air-conditioned. The classic rooms are 23 m² and best for those planning on exploring the capital city, while the superior suites are a generous 75m² and have a seating, working and dining area separate to the bedroom.
Hotel des Mille Collines has an outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts within the grounds and daily evening entertainment is provided by the pool. Hotel des Mille Collines offers three distinctly different restaurants; La Terrasse for indulgent breakfasts and an incredible Sunday brunch, Le Panorama for romantic dinners overlooking the city of Kigali and the rolling hills of Rwanda, and the more relaxed, open air Pool Bar, ready to cater for any craving.
Overlooking Kigali at night, with the silhouette of Rwanda’s famous rolling hills in the background, Le Panorama is the perfect place for an unforgettable evening.
Sunday Brunch, from 11:00 - 16:00 is a feast to remember. Sample all the local flavours combined with international cuisine.
Hotel des Mille Collines has an incredible history, and its success as a hotel today and the incredible actions of the staff in the past is why Wayfairer offers this property to customers. The hotel filed for bankruptcy back in 2005, but today is a shining monument in Kigali to show sanctity of life and how one person can really make a difference.
