As soon as you land in Cape Town, we expect you to be blown away by incredible scenery, brilliant food, a vast array of activities and a stunning city hotel. This is just the start as you drive into the beautiful Winelands, go whale watching off the Cape coast, enjoy a 'big 5' safari and relax at one of the world's most pristine and unspoilt beach destinations. We have travelled to all of these destinations extensively and have pieced them together to form this epic itinerary. Enjoy!
You will be met by a Wayfairer representative upon arrival and collect the keys for your hire car. Before your arrival, you will receive a digital copy of a detailed set of driving directions, a list of emergency contact numbers and a sat-nav system.
Your self-drive journey will begin with a short drive to your city hotel, where you will stay for three nights. We recommend a bed and breakfast basis so that you get the chance to experience Cape Town's incredible food and drink scene.
You will spend three days exploring Cape Town and enjoying the comforts of your hotel. The city itself offers a fantastic array of activities and day trips with the option of a city tour being arranged. This is a great way to see the top attractions through the eyes of a local - Cape Town is full of surprises and has a fascinating history.
As well as an organised tour, Cape Town is also a city that offers you the opportunity to explore on your own accord. From a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain to tasting seafood at one of the city's incredibly trendy food markets, you will never be short of things to do. With the freedom of a hire car, you can also explore the Cape Peninsula, including a visit to the penguins at Boulders Beach and some wonderful viewpoints along the coastal highway to Cape Point.
After breakfast and one last gaze at Table Mountain, you take a short drive into the stunning Winelands that surround the city. Franschhoek is a charming town with a fascinating history, world-class restaurants and local wine, plus stunning scenery.
As well as the stunning food and drink, Franschhoek is also a great base to explore the surrounding mountains and valleys by road, bike or on foot.
Following your stay in the Winelands you drive to the coastal highway and onto Hermanus. Hermanus is the activity hub of the region with whale and shark watching, mountain biking, forest treks, visits to vineyards and many more brilliant family-friendly day trips possible.
There are kilometres of coastline to be explored, which are fronted by pristine forests with some of our favourite nature treks on the continent. This is where having a hire car comes into its own, and the freedom to explore at your own pace is by far the best way to see this region. Seafood is on the menu here, and this is the site where some of Africa's first settlers set up their cottages to make the most of the bountiful oceans.
As with Cape Town, we can arrange for guided day trips and boat trips in search of the incredibly abundant marine life. From June-November, this is the breeding ground for super-pods of Southern Right Whales. However, travel at any time of year, and you will be spoilt with amazing activities on land and sea.
This morning you will enjoy breakfast before returning to Cape Town Airport for a domestic flight to the Kruger. On arrival will be met by a lodge representative and enjoy a game drive en route to the lodge. Arriving in time for a late lunch, you will have the chance to rest and prepare for your first safari activity that afternoon. After marvelling at Kruger's fantastic wildlife and enjoying a sunset drink overlooking the conservancy, you return for a sumptuous dinner under the stars and your first night in the African bush.
A typical day on safari will include an early morning game drive, a picnic breakfast in the bush, relaxing by the pool before a lovely lunch and then an afternoon safari activity. The early morning drives are brilliant for trying to see the big cats in action, and it's fantastic for photographers. The Greater Kruger region is renowned for incredible leopard sightings and has a healthy population of rhinos along with wild dogs, lions, elephants and hundreds of other species.
Spend your days enjoying the wildlife, scenery, food and brilliant service at the lodge. There really is nothing better than waking up to a hot drink in the African bush and being whisked off on a game drive in pursuit of the globe's most spectacular wildlife. The lodge will make sure you enjoy the perfect blend of activities and relaxation. If you wish, you can learn about the lodge's environmental and conservation work, all are in agreement that this is the future of tourism on the continent, and the methods being used are fascinatingly innovative.
This morning you get up early and enjoy breakfast before being driven to the airport in time to catch a flight back to Johannesburg and then on to the Mozambique coast of Vilanculos. Depending on the itinerary dates, you may need to overnight in Johannesburg, which of course, we will arrange for you, at one of our excellent city accommodation options. You will be met at Vilanculos Airport by a hotel representative and be transferred to your stunning property in a marine national park.
We are obsessed with this stretch of coastline for obvious reasons. Amazing beaches, incredible marine life, wonderful people and seafood that will blow you away. Mozambique is an ex-Portuguese colony, and the culture that has developed really comes out in the unique cuisine. The properties have been chosen as they offer you a diverse range of activities, as well as being tucked away in quiet corners of the coast away from the crowds. Activities include snorkelling, diving, deep sea fishing, treks, horse riding on the beach and, if you get lucky, swimming with whale sharks.
This morning you will wake up to the beautiful coastline and enjoy a lovely breakfast. You will then be transferred to Vilanculos Airport and fly back to Johannesburg before connecting onto your international flight.
