Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages is a small, family-run property tucked away amongst a grove of yellow-barked acacias in the Eastern sector of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy wilderness area.
Their collection of spacious, fully-inclusive cottages offers flexible living arrangements, which means there’s something perfect for you no matter if you are travelling alone, with a partner or, as they have no age limit, with your family.
The rooms are ensuite, with hot and cold running water, and the space is refreshingly light and open. From the sprawling veranda, you’re guaranteed uninterrupted views across the river to the plains beyond, and each cottage is entirely self-sufficient; with a personal chef, private vehicle and guide included.
As you have a private vehicle and guide included in your stay, game drives are done at your leisure, and wildlife is abundant. The 90,000-acre Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to an established pride of lions, cheetahs, large herds of elephants, black and white rhinos and other plains game. It also hosts The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, built in 1993 by Jane Goodall and now a haven for rescued Chimpanzees, where you’re invited to visit for free.
The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is hailed globally as a role model for conservation, with a strong focus on education and livestock/wildlife integration. They are perhaps best known for their innovative approach to saving Northern White Rhinos, the last of which remains in the care of Ol Pejeta’s much-loved rhino caretakers.
The property comprises of two single-bedroom cottages and two, spacious two-bedroom cottages with light, bright living and dining areas and a large veranda overlooking a seasonal river to the plains beyond. This kind of variation in room options makes Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages an ideal stay for couples, families or large groups.
The cottages are spaced well enough apart to ensure privacy, yet bush paths allow them to stay easily connected for groups or large families. In good weather, a large open fire is lit on the lawn in front of your cottage, and it makes for a marvellous spot to unwind before dinner after a long day on safari. There is a large, open indoor fire, too, so you can enjoy cosy evenings inside during bad weather.
A salt lick on the riverbed below the cottages is frequented by elephants, zebra and giraffes, and a communal viewing deck overlooking the salt lick allows you to get up close and personal with some of the conservancy’s much-loved tuskers.
Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages also hosts a number of yoga retreats each year, so the deck is often used as a yoga space; an idyllic spot to unroll one of the provided yoga mats and have a good stretch.
The private-use cottage has all you need, including a small kitchen to the rear, a living and dining area, an open fire and a spacious veranda. Game-driving vehicles are enclosed, custom-built 4WD safari vehicles, open-topped with large windows to the sides.
In camp, meals are served al fresco, on the veranda, with your private chef catering to your requirements exactly. In bad weather, there is also an indoor dining area. Large groups dine on the river deck.
Ol Pejeta’s commitment to creating a sustainable future for younger generations, their innovative approach to conservation, and the work they’ve undertaken thus far to save the Northern White Rhino, a species on the brink of extinction, is inspiring, to say the least. In the thick of the Covid pandemic, owners Andy and Sonja put their staff first; ensuring that none of them lost their jobs or were forced to take unpaid leave. So, it’s Ol Pejeta’s drive and vision, together with Andy and Sonja’s staff-first work ethic, expert knowledge, and easy-going approach to bush living, that makes Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages a Wayfairer-approved destination.
