Nestled against the foothills of the Andes, in Western Argentina, you’ll find style, rich culture and some of the country’s most famous and luxurious wineries.
The city of Mendoza serves as the gateway to the Winelands, and its picturesque colonial-style architecture, leafy avenues, and brilliant restaurants make for a rich and cosmopolitan base to soak up the incredible views of The Andes; the second-highest range of mountains in the world.
The surrounding bodegas (vineyards) are well known for producing flavoursome, award-winning reds, including what is largely known to be the best Malbec in the world. You can base yourself in Mendoza and take a wine tour or, as we like to do, book a few nights' stay in a luxury bodega and immerse yourself in the beauty, charm and tranquillity of this impeccable Argentinian region. The luxury, boutique-style hotels and lodges in this area ooze charm, serenity and sophistication, and there really is no better feeling than sitting on your patio, as the moon casts its gentle glow across the vines and the mountains behind whilst you sip a flavourful red and gaze up at the stars.
For those who prefer a more active holiday, you won’t be disappointed; biking, horse riding and skiing are also popular activities in and around Mendoza, and the Mendoza River offers adrenaline-pumping white water rafting expeditions throughout the year. Hikers will love exploring wild walking routes through the Andes around Cacheuta, Cerro Arco and El Salto. Intrepid trekkers can even take on the second highest peak in the world; Mount Aconcagua, which doesn’t require technical climbing knowhow and towers over South America at a staggering 6962 metres.
However you like to travel and whatever your interest, a few days in Mendoza is a vital part of any luxury Argentina holiday.
