Set under the shade of the Mopane trees, offering a unique bush and beach experience of Lake Kariba and Matusadona National Park, Changa Camp is a hidden gem in Zimbabwe’s wilderness. Built with wood and thatch this lovely camp has been designed to blend seamlessly into its surroundings.
Just eight tents are spread out along the treeline, two of which are family units offering joined rooms for privacy. Each luxurious tent offers large space all with views across the lake, the best part is the large outdoor decking complete with hammock and chairs to enjoy a great book as you listen to the lake lap the shores. A lovely addition is also the outdoor bathtubs – do take a soak under the stars to complete your perfect day.
The style at this camp is more inclined towards the traditional East African safari tents yet mixed perfectly with a more colonial blend creating an upmarket luxury camp for your stay here. Enjoy vehicle safaris and boat trips offering good wildlife viewing and some great fishing in Lake Kariba. Keen bird watchers will have a great chance of ticking of many species right from the comfort of camp of head out on foot or by boat to get up close and try see the 350 species that make this area home! Tracking is also a popular activity, get out the vehicle and on your feet for that unique on the ground experience.
This rich wilderness area offers exceptional game drives as well as walking and fishing safaris, all in the company of highly trained professional guides. Healthy populations of predators, including lion, leopard, hyena, and cheetah as well as elephant, buffalo, and antelope frequent the shoreline. Hippos and crocodiles are abundant in the cool waters.
Lake Kariba is the world’s largest man-made lake, covering almost 5,600 square kilometres and this vast expanse of fresh water is home to some fantastic fish species including the famous Tiger fish, Tilapia bream, Catfish and the mighty Vundu. For most of the year, Lake Kariba is truly one of the greatest places in Africa for fishing.
Every luxury tent has a very similar layout except for the two family units which offer connecting rooms to allow for privacy and safety to move around within the larger tents. You will enjoy your own private deck complete with hammock and seating area under the trees, not to mention the gorgeous outdoor bathtubs allowing for a indulgent soak under the stars! The furnishing is all high quality, there is power in all the rooms and hair dryers can be borrowed on request.
The main open-air lounge is designed for comfort in the heat of the day as well as relaxing in the evenings, this is where you will find a Wi-Fi connection. There is a great split-level deck complete with a lovely swimming pool which then leads down to the beach. Enjoy cooling off in the pool during your afternoons, or head down to the fire side in the evening to swap stories of your adventures with fellow travellers. The bar is fully stocked and set to one side to make the most of the breeze and shade throughout the day.
A good amount of activities are on offer from this camp, with fishing, boating and cruises being a great draw to this area. Head out on vehicle or walking safaris or better yet some rhino tracking to complete the day! Enjoy the plunge pool and the shady bar in the heat of the day.
It’s captain style communal dining whilst at Changa, with fresh local produce making for delicious meals. Food is simple and designed to hit the spot any time of day – all dietary needs can be met if the camp is informed in advance. They often try to do a meal down on the beach by the fire and all lit by candlelight – a brilliant experience!
In 2013 Change Camp along with Spurwing Island joined to setup the Matusadona Anti-poaching Project (MAPP). This is a great initiative designed to be operational support to the authorities – specifically working with communities to mitigate human-wildlife conflict as well as working to preserve wildlife and fish in the area.
Furthermore, they are a signed-up member for the great project Wayfairer loves to support – Pack for a Purpose. This allows travellers to make a direct difference from their every trip, Changa directly works with Manhanga Primary School, bringing key supplies can directly influence a child’s life.
