Couples & Families
Located right on the border of South Luangwa and boasting status as the closest camp to the main gate, award-winning Flatdogs Camp is the perfect safari lodge to choose for easy access to open-topped game drives and walking safaris around the vast wilderness of the national park.
Flatdogs owner and manager, Jess, has 25 years of operating experience, so your safari itinerary will be in good hands.
The lodge’s safari guides are trained to the highest standards with the South Luangwa Guide Exam, ready to show you the diverse wildlife that calls the park home with day and night game drives as well as walking safaris, plus answer all of your questions.
The camp consists of a main lodge with an a la carte restaurant and bar, a friendly team, a swimming pool, a wide range of activities and a gift shop, as well as four great accommodation options, which cater to all kinds of travellers. However, Flatdogs is noted particularly for its family-friendly ambiance, welcoming kids of all ages.
With no fences between South Luangwa and Flatdogs Camp, you’ll be treated to animal visitors without having to leave your room.
Regular appearances are made by elephants, bushbuck, giraffe, hippo and impala, to name a few.
Rove the parklands on safari, relax by the swimming pool, visit some of the many community and conservation projects that Flatdogs supports, or simply recline on your private deck and watch game drift in and out of the camp’s grounds.
There are four accommodation types at Flatdogs to choose from. Safari Tents offer the classic canvas experience, with gorgeous views of the Luangwa River. The Jackalberry Treehouse is comprised of two bedrooms with excellent game viewing opportunities from the private deck. The Crocodile Nest includes a private deck, private pool and rooms for four to six people, ideal for families. The most luxurious option is one of the beautiful chalets, also a great option for families, which has an enclosed verandah and sturdy walls – perfect if you’d prefer cool nights away from the sounds of the bush.
Flatdogs Camp includes a swimming pool and a mechanic’s workshops (handy if you’re on a driving safari), as well as numerous organised activities.
There is an a la carte restaurant, where you can order when and as you like, as well as a bar area.
Flatdogs Camp is focused on using sustainable tourism practices to benefit local communities and conservation. The camp holds a carbon neutral certification, making Flatdogs one of the first carbon neural operators in Zambia. Flatdogs’ responsible initiatives include community work through Project Luangwa, which provides education and help to small business in the area. Environmental and conservation projects are many and varied, including supporting Conservation South Luangwa and paying the salaries of Community Forest Guards. A portion of your final bill is set aside and goes straight towards these conservation and community projects, so you can be reassured that your presence is creating a positive impact on the people and places you visit.
