Mwaleshi Camp provides an exceptional off-the-grid experience in one of Zambia’s last remaining true wilderness areas.
Set on the crystal-clear banks of the Mwaleshi River in the untamed North Luangwa National Park, this simple, rustic camp will take you far off the beaten track.
Mwaleshi is an exclusive, seasonal camp, only open from June to October each year and offering just four reed-and-thatch chalets. The camp is disassembled in the off season to preserve the pristine environment.
The camp focuses solely on authentic walking safaris to track big game on foot and see the park’s incredible wildlife at a more intimate level.
Although the camp doesn’t offer game drives, they do have a vehicle onsite to drive guests to walking areas further afield.
Set just 10 kilometres from the Mwaleshi River’s confluence with the Luangwa River, large herds of animals congregate in this area including elephants, buffalo, hippos, zebra, lion, hyena, wildebeest and diverse birdlife.
You may even be lucky to spot the endangered black rhino, which was reintroduced to the park in 2003.
The rhino are very shy and there have only been a few sightings in the past years, however a visit to the camp is also a great chance to learn about the fantastic conservation efforts to protect the rhino.
The camp’s guides are some of the best in the country. Knowledgeable and passionate, they will tell amazing stories and teach you about the secrets of the bush as you roam through the beautiful wilderness.
There are four refreshingly simple chalets constructed reed-and-thatch and furnished using natural materials. Choose from twin or double beds with stone headboards, relax in the canvas chairs by the windows or swing in the hammock in the shade. Each chalet comes with mosquito nets, mosquito spray, drinking water, solar lighting, and open-air en-suite bathrooms. The bathrooms have flush toilets and are set beneath the trees with soft sand floors and mats. Each morning you’ll receive a fresh jug of hot water and you’ll be supplied with hot water for the shower on request.
The camp’s main area is an open, thatched ‘chitenje’ overlooking the river. You’ll find a wooden bar, cosy armchairs and sofas, a small library and a lovely communal dining table. Follow the steps to the riverbank to discover a firepit beside the water and sunloungers under a thatched shelter. The water here is often shallow and safe enough to take a cool dip in the water, but always be alert and check with your guides, as this is true wilderness.
The camp offers some of the best walking safaris in Africa with renowned expert guides, along with birdwatching activities There’s a communal lounge area, a small library and sunloungers by the river.
You’ll stay at Mwaleshi on a full-board basis including a delicious breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, three-course dinner and all local drinks. Meals are served at the communal dining table or by the river.
The camp is operated by first-rate guides, renowned across the country for their expertise, and they take every measure to protect the environment while offering a wonderfully authentic bush experience. The camp is seasonal, meaning it is deconstructed for most of the year to reduce its environmental impact. With only four simple chalets, the camp ensures that its surroundings remain tranquil and unspoiled. They use natural materials, solar powered lighting, bucket showers and the camp is involved in some fantastic conservation efforts, including involvement in the reintroduction of the rare black rhino.
