The historic town of Livingstone, named for famous Scottish explorer David Livingstone, is a destination in itself with tree-lined streets, pretty colonial architecture and rich heritage.

However, the main draw of the town is the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls, a thundering cascade that is truly something to behold, boasting UNESCO World Heritage status as well as a coveted place as one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.

Victoria Falls, also known by its local name Mosi Oa Tunya “The Smoke That Thunders,” is located around seven kilometres out of town, fed by the rushing waters of the Zambezi River.

The mile-long curtain of falling water is shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe, and you can explore both sides if you bring your passport and cross the border, which is worth it for the epic views.

Which of the many available waterfall-focused activities you participate in depends on your level of daring as well as what time you visit Victoria Falls, as seasonal water levels can dictate which experiences are safe to do.

Scenic river walks and hikes along the surrounding footpaths are a good year-round (and more relaxing) activity; whilst adrenaline chasers will love white water rafting, bungee jumping, ziplining and swimming out to the precariously placed Devil’s Pool – a deep natural pool created by erosion, which allows you to swim out to the edge of the waterfall without being swept over by the currents.

If you can tear yourself away from the majestic falls, there are plenty of other things to see and do in the area, including horse riding excursions, birding tours, village visits to learn about local culture and customs, an educational trip to the Livingstone Museum, sunset cruises along the Zambezi and fishing trips, amongst many other activities.
