Couples, Families & Honeymooners

"Kiota" means "nest" in Swahilli and this beautiful tented camp certainly has a bird’s eye view of one Tanzania and Africa’s most famous areas. Kiota is situated in the central Serengeti’s Seronera River Valley and although there are lots of other lodges and camps in this area Kiota Camp manages to maintain a wild, adventurous feel.

The central Serengeti is a wonderful year-round wildlife viewing destination as it is ideally placed to explore the wooded hills further north and the short grass plains to the south. It is particularly good for big cats and wildlife densities swell twice a year when The Great Migration passes through this region. The exact movement and timing of the migration is notoriously hard to predict but traditionally the great herds would move through during April/May heading north and back in November as they return south.

The beauty of the camp is matched by the experience and quality of the staff, who will do everything they can to make your stay one to remember. Stories around the campfire take place in the evening and the staff can organise a bush breakfast or dinner and even a romantic private dinner under the glittering Serengeti sky.

Kiota Camp combines perfectly with it’s sister property Chaka Camp, which is a mobile camp moving twice a year between the north and south to follow the migration.

The camp

Kiota Camp emphasis an adventurous and traditional safari feel, however the camp doesn’t feel basic or clinical like some of the more rustic options in the Serengeti. The canvas tents are spacious at 36 metres squared and they are packed with well thought through, cohesive design features that really sets this camp apart from its competitors.

The 12 spacious tents are dispersed, roughly 20m apart, along a contour of the low Banagi Hill, giving anywhere on site fantastic panoramic views and the potential for spotting wildlife right within the camp. Each tent can be configured to sleep a maximum of two adults and two children or as doubles, twin, triples as necessary. Although children are permitted, parents should be aware that this is an unfenced camp in a wilderness area. It is not unusual to have wildlife near to indeed in camp.

Inside the tents feel very light, afforded by the roll up screens around three sides of the tent. You may like to leave shutters rolled up, in order to watch the first rays of light bathe the Serengeti from the comfort of your bed. Amenities are as you would expect with electric lighting, charging points, an electronic safe and a small writing desk and chair. The en-suite bathroom towards one end of the tent has a flush toilet, his and her wash basins and a safari-style bucket shower.  The canvas roof overhangs to form a shaded private verandah with a table and chairs.

The large main area continues with the same design theme of muted earth tones and wood furniture and consists of a large dining room, a separate bathroom and then a more comfortable living tent with sofas, a bar and a small library.

Facilities

Facilities at the camp include a large communal main area with a dining room, comfortable lounge, bar and small library. Activities focus on game drives in the Serengeti either with your private guide or with a guide from the camp

Dining

Dining is usually on individual tables in the open sided dining area, meals out in the bush can also be arranged.

Why Wayfairer

We love the small owner-run company behind Kiota Camp, they really care for their staff and work to make their operations and their camps as responsibly run as possible. Kiota is solar powered (with a back-up generator), refuse is recycled as much as possible, fuel consumption is offset and almost all of the furniture you will find in this camp has been locally made.
