Noel Rodrigo’s Leopard Safaris - Eco-friendly luxury tented camp

Cost Per Night
Perfect For

Families (with children over 3 years old), Couples & Honeymoons,

Noel Rodrigo’s Leopard Safaris offer an unforgettable camping and safari experience in the Sri Lankan wilderness.

Founded in 2006 by wildlife specialist Noel Rodrigo this award-winning safari company offers luxury tented accommodation on the outskirts of two of Sri Lanka’s best national parks – one is located by the elephant fence at Yala National Park in southeast Sri Lanka and the other is on the edge of Wilpattu National Park on the northwest coast.

Whilst staying at the camps you’ll enjoy early morning and late afternoon safaris with highly experienced guides and you’ll have a chance to get up close to Sri Lankan wildlife, including elusive leopards.

Noel is known as Sri Lanka’s ‘Leopard Man’ and leopards are a particular focus for the company, hence the name!

Both Yala and Wilpattu National Parks are renowned for their thriving leopard population and these incredible creatures are frequently seen on game drives. You’re also likely to see a variety of birds, reptiles and mammals, including elephants, sloth bears and monkeys.

The camps at Yala and Wilpattu are made up of semi-permanent structures with fully customised mobile tents which allow you to appreciate the natural beauty of your surroundings without compromising on comfort.

The company put great emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly tourism practices at their camps and their aim is to offer a unique safari experience that doesn’t impact the habitat of the wildlife in the areas surrounding their campsites.

The camp

Spacious mobile tents are available at the Yala and Wilpattu campsites and there’s a choice of double, twin, triple and family options. The tents have king-size or twin beds, jungle-view living areas with chairs, outside there’s a separate bathroom area which has an open-air hot/cold water shower, and a private sit-down toilet is attached to the living area of the tent. The Yala camp also has two luxury lodge tents which are inspired by African lodges and are ideal for guests who are looking for a more luxurious camping experience. The luxury lodge tents have a romantic king size four-poster bed, en-suite bathroom with hot running water, plus a private access path and private deck.

Common areas at the camps include a lounge tent furnished with comfortable chairs and cushions, and a kitchen where you can join hands-on Sri Lankan cookery demonstrations. The Yala site also has a saltwater eco-pool where guests can refresh themselves after game drives in the national parks. All meals, BBQs and snacks, alcoholic beverages, game drives accompanied by a wildlife specialist and entrance fees to the national parks are included in the rate.

Facilities

Customised mobile tents, fresh linen and towels, jungle bar, lounge tent, hammocks, camera and phone charging, mini bar and snack box, wildlife library, binocular, umbrellas and ponchos, safety deposit box.

Dining

Camp chefs prepare traditional Sri Lankan dishes using locally grown fruits and vegetables. Dining is usually a communal experience around the campfire under the stars, however honeymooners can request private dining.

Why Wayfairer

Noel Rodrigo’s Leopard Safaris is committed to sustainable and eco-friendly tourism practices. The majority of the energy at their camps is sourced from solar panels, and a dual battery system is used in their jeeps (this charges a second battery whilst the vehicles are being used on safari and this battery is used to run the kitchen’s freezers and refrigerators later on). They also use solar water pumps and a solar powered heating system for the shower in the Luxury Lodge tents.

All food is locally sourced which supports the local community, and it also reduces gas emissions and energy consumption caused by industrial farming and long-distance produce transportation. The campsites avoid plastic, and use natural and recycled materials wherever possible including stainless steel and glass water bottles.
