Originally built in 1804, The Kandy House was once the home of an aristocratic Sri Lankan family.
Set within a six-acre estate, 7 km from Kandy, this former manor house has been converted into a stunning hotel which combines classic Sri Lankan architecture with Dutch colonial furnishing and a stylish finish.
This charming boutique hotel has just nine rooms and offers guests the experience of staying in a private house rather than a conventional hotel.
The Kandy House is a wonderful place to spend a relaxing few days, and it is an excellent base for exploring Kandy.
You can take a tuk-tuk into Kandy to discover the Royal Botanic Gardens (Peradeniya) and the Temple of the Tooth, the holiest Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka, before returning to the hotel for afternoon tea or a cocktail and dinner on the veranda.
The hotel has bicycles should you wish to explore the surrounding countryside, or you can take a walk through the local village and paddy fields to the nearby temple.
Alternatively, you can simply relax on the cushioned teak sun loungers beside the pool under the shade of tropical plants and trees.
The Kandy House offers guests seclusion and serenity. If you’re looking for total privacy or perhaps you’d like to celebrate a special occasion with your friends and family, it is possible to book the entire house.
The Kandy House has just nine bedrooms – all named after Butterflies which are found in Sri Lanka. There are four spacious Ultra Rooms (Red Spot Duke, Peacock Royal, Indian Admiral and Black Rajah), which have access to a veranda where you can enjoy afternoon tea whilst watching the colourful birds and butterflies, and five Deluxe Rooms (Sunbeam, Cornelian, Monkey Puzzle, Pioneer and Lime Butterfly), which are set around the two-storey central courtyard. (Note: The Black Rajah Garden Suite and the adjoining Monkey Puzzle room are the best options for families with children – who must be over 12 years).
The hotel has a beautiful infinity swimming pool which borders a tropical jungle with views over the lush rice fields, a small library and a massage room. Bicycles are available for guest use, and the hotel can arrange yoga sessions on request. Breakfast is served either on the front veranda or at the rear of the house overlooking the lawn and pool. In the evenings, you can enjoy a cocktail in the Butterfly Bar and then dine in style in the colonial dining room, or if you prefer, you can sit on the veranda, or for a more romantic dining experience, you can enjoy a private candlelit dinner beside the pool, serenaded by bullfrogs and crickets.
Restaurant, bar, pool, library, massage room and masseur with 25 years of experience as an Ayurvedic therapist, plus each room is designated a personal butler to cater to all your requirements.
Every evening there’s a daily set menu which features dishes such as crab ravioli and fresh prawn, coriander and chilli pasta, plus there’s a 10-course curry feast twice a week.
At Wayfairer, we aim to work with hotels that support their local communities. The Kandy House is part of Manor House Concepts, which owns five luxury boutique hotels in Sri Lanka and a restaurant in Kandy. Manor House Concepts always respect the communities where they operate, and they’re committed to ‘giving back’ (for example, after the devastating tsunami in 2004, they provided funding for the construction of a small kindergarten school, and they continue to support the school to this day). Manor House Concepts are currently setting up a number of other sustainable community programs in different areas of Sri Lanka.
