Couples, Families & Honeymoons
The luxurious Ulagalla Resort is a beautifully restored mansion estate, set in 58 acres of woodland and verdant paddy fields. A 150-year-old colonial building, referred to as the wallawwa (a Sinhalese word for mansion) sits at the heart of the resort.
On the ground floor is the reception and lobby area, whilst on the top floor you’ll find the Liya Wela restaurant which offers wonderful views of the gardens and infinity pool. This exceptional restaurant serves traditional Sri Lankan cuisine, plus Eastern and Western options, and with no set meal times, you simply eat whenever you want!
Individual chalets are set among the resort’s beautiful gardens with each one offering scenic views - either of the lush green paddy fields or the sparkling reservoirs which adjoin the resort.
Within the tranquil grounds surrounding your chalet you can expect to see monkeys, peacocks and elephants, plus a variety of bird and butterfly species.
Ulagalla Resort is located 20km south of the ancient city of Anuradhapura and is close to the Cultural Triangle sites so you can easily explore the Buddhist temples, sculptures and monuments.
As well as sightseeing there are a number of activities you can enjoy during your stay at Ulagalla - you can cycle to the local villages, enjoy nature walks around the reservoirs, ride one of Ulagalla’s horses through the paddy fields, kayak on the reservoir, or learn how to make a traditional Sri Lanka curry during a cooking demonstration with the resort’s chefs!
The resort features 20 luxurious, detached chalets and one exquisite two-bedroom villa (Nikawewa Villa). The stilted chalets are set in the Ulagalla Wing in beautiful landscaped gardens. Each chalet features a large bathroom with a shower and twin sinks, a spacious bedroom and living area with a king-size four-poster bed (note: two chalets have twin beds instead), plus a dining table, TV and sofa. Outside you have your own private plunge pool (note: all of the chalets have a private plunge pool except chalet one and two which have an in-room jacuzzi instead), sunbathing deck, outdoor table and chairs, plus a double sun lounger and umbrella.
Whilst all of the chalets offer privacy, chalet seven is the most private and secluded as it is set further away from the main building, making it a great option for couples/honeymooners. The Nikawewa Villa has two bedrooms and a large communal area with a 180° view of the lush paddy fields, plus a small, private swimming pool. Nikawewa Villa is ideal for a family or group. Each chalet has two bicycles so you can ride through the paddy fields to the main swimming pool or to the wallawwa for breakfast!
Ulagalla features a large swimming pool, a luxury spa, a fully equipped gym with pool and sauna, stables with two horses, archery stations, and kayaks for use on the reservoir.
Guests at Ulagalla can enjoy a fine dining experience in the main restaurant (Liya Wela) or you can dine by the pool, out in the paddy fields, or in the privacy of your own chalet.
We aim to work with properties that are mindful of their environments and committed to sustainable tourism. Ulagalla has a strong ecological focus and is a leader in environmental design. This eco-friendly resort was constructed using green building material and no trees were cut down during construction, in fact 1000 root balled trees have subsequently been planted on the property. Half of the resort’s energy requirement is generated through solar power and Ulagalla has the largest solar farm in Sri Lanka. The resort has an LEED certificate (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) which is an internationally recognised green building certification.
