One of the few accommodation options, and the most comfortable option in southern region around Kamambe, Emeraude Kivu Resort serves up panoramic vistas of the lesser visited southern waters of Lake Kivu, scattered with small forested islands against a backdrop of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The resort is in an excellent location for travellers wishing to visit Nyungwe National Park, track chimpanzees in Cyamudongo, or explore deeper into Rwanda.
Emeraude Kivu Resort has a small local pier and offers a range of boat trips out to the small inhabited islands of Lake Kivu. Meet the locals from Gihaya island and see their incredible weaving skills or go bird watching on IREBA island, a haven for birdlife.
From the resort local fishermen can be seen and heard, singing their local songs as they return from a days work, and from the rooms and the outdoor area of the restaurant, daily sunsets never fail to impress, with bright oranges, pinks and reds lighting up the horizon.
Emeraude Kivu Resort is a welcoming and friendly resort, and staff will go out of their way to ensure guests are happy. The onsite restaurant has a delicious and varied menu of Rwandan and International fusion dishes, and as most food is sourced from their own garden, the dishes taste fresh and flavourful.
With plans to expand the resort and add a spa and swimming pool, Emeraude Kivu Resort has a bright future and is the perfect place to explore a rural region of East Africa filled with nature.
Emeraude Kivu Resort has 8 rooms and 2 suites, all with beautiful views over the southern shores of Lake Kivu and the green islands scattered throughout the horizon. Each of the rooms has a private balcony facing west for daily sunset panoramas, and the rooms are comfortable, compact and cosy but aren’t extravagant. Each of the 8 rooms are decorated with a splash of colour from Rwanda fabrics and come with an ensuite bathroom, comfortable double bed, desk, kettle and microwave.
Rooms can be joined for families, or they can stay in one of the two suites, which are situated further down the hill, still with lake views but more privacy. The suites are tented cottages with living room areas and large outdoor decks for private dinners. Built on a raised platform, the suites are closer to the lake itself and local fisherman can be seen floating by in the evening after a day of fishing, and endemic species of birdlife often turn up on the deck in the mornings.
A lounge and TV area for socialising, garden area, gift shop and bar. The resort can also arrange trips to local attractions.
A restaurant with indoor seating and an outdoor patio overlooking the calm waters of Lake Kivu. Packed lunches for day trips can be arranged.
Built by the Rutagarama family, who come from the region, Emeraude Kivu Resort was their way to help Rwanda become a more popular tourist destination, in the attempt to improve the quality of life for people in the region and country. Emeraude Kivu Resort works with the local people of nearby Gihaya island to improve lake management, and bring win-win opportunities to the people to support their livelihoods and reduce daily hardship.
