In the impenetrable rainforest, untouched and undiscovered lies our most remote lodge in Peru. Doubling up as a research centre for scientists and conservationists, Tambopata Research Centre offers a truly special immersion within the Amazon rainforest - it is the only lodge that lies within the National Reserve in Madre de Dios.
Entirely at one with nature, you’ll soon adjust to life in a windowless lodge looking out onto the verdant green surrounding. At Tambopata Research Centre the intense presence of the forest is vivid. This is the primary forest where an abundance of wildlife dwells in the absence of people. Tambopata Research Centre is a true adventure and once the setting sinks in, there is always more to be seen and discovered.
Each day here brings with it more natural discovery. Located just meters from the Chuncho macaw clay lick, share your breakfast with macaws before setting off to observe them by the hundred cause chaotic colour patterns as they feed. This jungle is filled with kaleidoscopic spectacles, where different colourful birds come together with white-lipped peccaries at the claylicks, monkeys swing parallel to the trails through the thickets.
Trace the tracks of jaguars, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of one waking from slumber near the riverbanks. Explore the five distinct pristine habitats and get involved in the countless conservation projects taking place on site. Talk to experts whilst they stay in the same lodge as you, and hear about the findings of their fieldwork.
Climb on board, and meander through towards islands and ponds where caiman and giant river otters dwell. Venture out into the night, and discover new species unknown to the rest of the world. The opportunities for exploring the forests are endless, and every day new natural sightings thrill visitors here.
Wander down a series of wooden boardwalks elevated above the forest floor to reach the common areas to unwind after a day’s jungle safari. Relax with a refreshing beverage and enjoy hearty locally sourced food in a low-lit setting completely surrounded by the jungle. The Tambopata Research Centre experience is one that will last a lifetime, it’s a functioning centre with luxury facilities making the Amazon rainforest more accessible and understood by us all.
Tambopata Research Centre consists of 24 bedrooms built combining traditional native architecture and materials. Wood, palm fronds, wild cane and clay are bound together using modern and low impact, eco-lodge technology. All rooms feature an open unscreened wall facing into the forest, which is particularly exciting. The four interconnected buildings are joined by elevated walkways, and there are 8 superior rooms, 8 comfort rooms, 4 suites and 4 deluxe rooms. The newest deluxe rooms have private deckings with hammocks, an outdoor rain shower and a freestanding outdoor bathtub. All rooms are ensuite, and well equipped with mosquito nets, bedside tables, in-room safe and umbrellas for downpours.
WiFi is available in the common areas of the main building. There is a restaurant, bar and lounge area to relax in with open windows fronting onto the forests surrounding. A variety of Amazon safaris are available, including visits to the macaw clay lick just 500 meters away from the lodge, wildlife watching on extensive trail networks, night walks and sunset boat trips along the Tambopata River. Join scientists in residence for lectures on conservation projects taking place here.
The lodge offers delicious food in the restaurant and snacks in the bar. There are locally sourced fresh buffet breakfasts, and extensive lunch and dinner menus. The Pisco Sours here are particularly good. Whilst you dine, there are frequent visitors of monkeys and macaws, a really special experience.
Tambopata Research Centre is one of our personally picked lodges due to its extensive conservation efforts and outstanding support of local communities indigenous to the Amazon. Both Tambopata Research Centre and Refugio Amazonas are owned by the accredited Rainforest Expeditions company who has been expanding research and conservation since 1989. This is an enriching context to enter into the Amazon, and income provided from a visit here is shared with neighbouring communities, farms and local artisans. Nature is the primary passion of Rainforest Expeditions, and the creation of these authentic sanctuaries aim to introduce guests to this precious environment sustainably, to increase the benefits of positive tourism.
On a Wayfairer adventure, we ensure that all needs are catered for with a 24hr Luxury Concierge Service, and the most compassionate local guides in each location. Along with our care of clients, we also care deeply for the locations we enter into, respecting these and leaving places unscathed by our visit.
