Almost entirely hidden in the rainforest, Refugio Amazonas provides an authentic stepping stone into the wild. A pocket of luxury in the expansive green, a visit here brings with it an introduction to the incredible conservation and exploration opportunities available within Peru’s Amazon.

Climb up the soaring canopy tower for unrivalled views over the vast expanses of forest surrounding. Spot toucans, parrots, macaws and various canopy flocks. Paddle around Lake Condenado on the lookout for hoatzin, caiman and horned screamers. Visit an ethnobotanical trail where working jungle communities farm Brazil nuts, and help scientists collect ever-important data of animals that are so rare, they are yet to be studied.

It comes as no surprise that Refugio Amazonas was voted ‘South America’s Leading Eco-Lodge’ in the World Travel Awards 2020. With countless conservation projects underway on-site, Refugio’s offer of varied and exciting programs that introduce visitors into their special spot is joined by spacious and airy rooms that back onto the vast forests surrounding.

Just observing the sounds of the forest is an experience of its own. From the veranda, cocoon in a hammock and listen to the crescendo of jungle calls as the evening turns to dusk. The rainfall here is meditative, the slight sound of pattering on the wooden rooftops adds to the gentle symphony.

After a busy day of exploring, learning and seeing return to a comfortable and luxurious lodge so perfectly enfolded into the forest. Enter into a team of like-minded people, conscious and deeply connected to their environment and sit back, engage with a two-sided conversation with the world’s most ancient forests.

The Property

This is a 32 bedroom jungle lodge set within a 200-hectare private reserve in the buffer zone of Tambopata. Four wings are all connected by wooden boardwalks, and each bedroom opens out onto the surrounding rainforest, entirely immersing you. All rooms feature windowless verandas providing much-needed airflow. They are built with traditional local materials such as bamboo, adobe and palm and the decor is complemented by Yanchamama bark harvested by local artisans from the Eseeja community. Kerosene lamps and candles provide warm lighting, and the sounds of the forest can be enjoyed from the swinging hammock. For couples wanting a private, romantic experience it’s worth requesting the newly opened Amazon Villa - an exclusive lodge further into the jungle but within reach of all the facilities at Refugio.

Facilities

Refugio Amazonas has a large common area and dining room that are both spacious and open. The main building has a loft on the second story for an eye-level view of the surrounding rainforest canopy. There are special children programs here and even an eco-playground. The wellness centre is available for holistic treatments, massages and aromatherapy. Electricity is in the common areas up until 10pm where kerosene lamps and candles are available for the night. A 110V generator is turned on once a day to recharge batteries for guests. There is a 30 meter canopy tower to give spectacular views of the forest and monkey and bird occupants.

Dining

The dining room is a spacious open building where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served as part of an all-inclusive experience. Dine on long wooden tables, a community feel in candle light. All food and drink are sourced locally, hearty dinners are complemented by a wide range of beverages from the bar.
