A romantic, eco-friendly and luxury glamping experience on the banks of the beautiful Takou River

Cost Per Night
Perfect For

Couples, Honeymooners & Families

Enjoy eco-luxury with a glamping experience at Takou River’s Magic Cottages, a tranquil riverside retreat which has been voted one of the top 10 luxury lodges in New Zealand.

Magic Cottages is set right on the banks of the Takou River, a paddle away from the beaches of Takou Bay and encased in 150 acres of native bush. At the river, you can fish, swim, paddle and wildlife-watch before settling into your cottage or luxury tent with a delicious gourmet meal made with locally-grown, organic ingredients.

The property is comprised of four private cottages, the lodge and a glamping (luxury camping) site, all of which offer indulgence in the heart of nature. Choose from cosy wood fires, alfresco claw-foot baths, opulent spa treatments or a dip in the hot tub perched right on the riverbank.

We highly recommend the glamping experience for an opportunity to wake up with the chirping birds and go to sleep listening to the bubbling waters of the river – all while retaining the luxuries of sophisticated hotel accommodation, including a super king bed with feather duvet, a vintage-style kitchen and bathroom with hot shower.

The romantic setting and secluded location of Magic Cottages at Takou River ideal for honeymooners and couples, as well as families looking for a private getaway.

The property

The private and exclusive glamping site is tucked away in a corner of the 150-acre estate, overlooking a scenic bend in the river. The white canvas safari-style canopy is set on a permanent timber floor, with French doors that open out onto your own private deck.

The luxury tent includes a rustic-style kitchen, equipped with a solar-powered electric fridge, gas hobs and all the crockery and cutlery you’ll need for a self-catering glamping experience. Alternatively, you can use the barbecue facilities out on the deck or simply order gourmet meals to your room. The bathroom has a hot shower and flushing toilet, though there is also a private and romantic outdoor bath overlooking the river, shaded by Pohutukawa trees. The interiors are lit with candles and solar-powered lights and there are also power points for you to be able to charger your camera and phone.

Facilities

Your glamping tent comes with your own private jetty, where you’ll find a canoe which you can take out on the river for fishing, swimming or paddling.

Dining

The cottages and glamping tent are equipped with full kitchen facilities for self-catering accommodation. However, if you’d prefer to have your meals cooked for you, three-course gourmet meals can be brought right to your room, with menus designed by Colin Ashton from the award-winning Kerikeri restaurant, Food at Wharepuke.

Why Wayfairer

A stay here leaves only the lightest of footprints. The 150 acres of land where the property sits is certified organic and therefore free of all chemical sprays, pesticides or artificial fertilisers. The property uses solar power, rainwater harvesting, chemical-free water treatment, recycling and composting, grey water for irrigation, eco-friendly cleaning products and toiletries, reclaimed building products, organic vegetable gardens and much, much more.
