Discover the spectacular landscapes of the Canterbury region and “The Garden City” of Christchurch.

With its vast plains, spectacular vineyards, wild coastlines, glacial lakes and snow-capped Southern Alps, the Canterbury region in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island offers breathtaking landscapes.

Popular destinations in this region include the “English” city of Christchurch, the spectacular Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, and the famous whale-watching town of Kaikoura.

The picturesque city of Christchurch is situated on the edge of the Canterbury Plains that stretch to the Southern Alps.

Known as “The Garden City” due to its many green parks and famous botanical gardens, Christchurch is the South Island’s largest city and it is the gateway to the Canterbury region.

There’s plenty of activities to enjoy here including riding a gondola 500m above sea level to take in stunning 360° views of Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains and the high peaks of the Southern Alps, exploring the city by double-decker bus or tram, punting on the Avon River, discovering beautiful beaches such as Sumner and Scarborough, and visiting the city’s heritage sites, museums and art galleries, plus it’s many bars, restaurants and boutique shops.

To the west of the Canterbury region is Aoraki Mount Cook National Park which is home to New Zealand’s highest mountain Aoraki Mount Cook (3,754m), whilst the submarine trenches off the coastline of Kaikoura are thousands of metres deep, providing a perfect environment for sperm whales, dolphins and seals.
