Couples, honeymoons & adults.
On the fringes of the vegetated Kalahari Desert in southern Namibia and within it’s own private nature reserve sits Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge.
Made up of of just 12 spacious guesthouses and a beautiful main area, this lodge is the perfect stopover for those heading further south to the Fish River Canyon. It can work equally well for a couple of nights on the way to the Namib-Naukluft National Park, as it is well worth visiting in its own right.
Aside from the superior house, which is larger and has it’s own private plunge pool, the other 11 guesthouses have the same facilities, but each with their own character.
They are arranged around a dry lake or vlei, which is popular with the local wildlife, so just relaxing on your private deck can yield some nice sightings. Each of the individual guesthouses are named after one of the large mammals that you might find in the area, such as the oryx, the giraffe or the eland. It goes to show just how diverse this part of the Kalahari can be.
For those who want a little more adventure and exploration than the comfortable accommodation at Kalahari Red Dunes, the lodge offers an overnight trans-Kalahari walk, which we really recommend for those looking to investigate the environment in more intimate detail. After an initial night spent in the lodge head out on a full day hike with your expert guides and enjoy a picnic lunch among the dunes. Continue to walk in the afternoon, to the luxurious dunes camp, where you will spend the night, before a short hike after breakfast the following morning back to the main lodge.
The buildings of Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge are dominated by their heavy thatch roofs, which help to regulate the temperature inside, during the Kalahari’s extreme highs and lows. They are also reminiscent of the impressive social weaver nests which can be found to adorn trees in this region of Namibia. Overall the result is that the lodge blends in nicely to the environment. Inside the décor echoes this understated, natural vibe with some pleasing pops of colour added with plump cushions and comfy throws. The main area has a spacious bar, inside and outside dining areas, a small gift shop, a lounge and a tempting swimming pool, wireless internet is available in this main area.
Each guesthouse is slightly different and can reached either by a wooden walkway from the main lodge, or it is possible to drive nearer to the rooms which are further away. They are a good distance apart ensuring privacy. Our favourite feature is the spacious decks and large windows, facing out towards the vlei and the lodge’s waterhole. Keep a look out for local eland, often skittish and normally seen running into distance, they seem to be very comfortable around the footprint of the lodge.
Includes a bar, swimming pool, WiFi in the main area, a sundowner terrace and small gift shop. Activities on offer include nature and sundowner drives, hiking and mountain biking trails.
Meals are often served on the terrace during the summer and inside in the restaurant near to the open fire during the cooler mornings and evenings of the summer.
Kalahari Red Dunes not only provides employment and development opportunities for local people, but it is works to protect and conserve it’s own 10,000 acre private nature reserve. They have worked to remove fences, maintain waterholes and even provide supplemental feed to animals in times of extreme drought. As a result, in such an arid area of Namibia the diversity of fauna and flora is astonishing.
