8 days Inhambane, Tofo & Barra

A rare and exclusive chance to experience conservation-in-action with one of the world’s leading marine conservation organisations along the stunning shores of southern Mozambique.

This could be the ultimate beach getaway! We have teamed up with the Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF), project pioneers and ocean saviours for many of southern Africa’s most endangered aquatic species, to offer a unique opportunity for our clients to partake in active conservation efforts. Included too in this week-long itinerary are some other wonderful wildlife highlights including estuary snorkelling with pygmy sea horses and mangrove kayaking to see flamingos and other rare birdlife. There is also ample chance to enjoy the world class golden sandy beaches, underwater drift drives and sumptuous surfing conditions on offer as well as visits into the historic town of Inhambane.

You will be based in the quaint, vibrant village of Tofo; a bit of a hidden gem if you ask us! Once solely a sleepy fishing village cross hangout for the intrepid backpacker and surf enthusiast, Tofo today has benefitted from a steady, yet still small, stream of international expats to develop a low-key, thriving tourism and conservation-focused community. The sleepy authenticity of a traditional Mozambican village remains; with a buzzing local food market at the heart of Tofo life, complemented by some fantastic Portuguese and Italian restaurants together with lively beach bars well-frequented by divers and surfers alike!

Mass tourism has, thankfully, not yet discovered the region (aside from the influx of South African partygoers over the Christmas/New Year period) and thus you will not find big hotels here. Instead, there are a pleasing plethora of characterful independent accommodation options of which we have opted for the eco-minded, ever-reliable Sava Dunes.

Perfectly positioned in mind for activity launch sites in Tofo and the nearby Barra beach, this five-bedroom owner run lodge commands expansive views of both beach and ocean, and offers a tranquil beach retreat experience, with a raw, close-to-nature appeal.

This itinerary works perfectly for any interested in the underwater world and the incredible work going on here.

What's included:

  • Private airport transfers
  • Accommodation on a full board basis plus tea, coffee & drinking water, Wi-Fi in the main area and limited non-motorized activities.
  • Activities as mentioned in your itinerary
  • Professional local staff with fair salaries
  • Donation to Marine Megafauna Foundation

Day 2-7 – Explore with Marine Megafauna Foundation
Day 2-7 – Explore with Marine Megafauna Foundation Listing Image

The next six full days you will explore this gorgeous part of the world with the experts at Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF).

MMF has been conducting ground-breaking marine research along Mozambique’s southern coastline since 2003. Their team pioneered the exploration of the Mozambican coastline, made countless scientific discoveries, and is continuing with world-leading research on threatened marine species, specifically sharks, rays, and sea turtles.

For your week here you will have the incredible experience of getting to go behind the scenes at MMF, meet the experts, see world-leading research and join in whichever project is on-going (this will be determined at time of travel).

MMF have core projects that they focus on and work with numerous researchers. Below are examples of projects you could experience whilst out here. Do note this will vary greatly depending on what is going on at the time of travel, but we promise you are in for a once in a lifetime experience.

  • Protecting the coastline of Inhambane is a core focus of MMF, they work closely with dive shops and the local Mozambican people on education of species and specific habitat protections. You could be asked to get involved analysing data and get a full tour of what they are doing over time with the collected data. Spending the day with people passionate about the environment and explaining what they have achieved and continue to achieve is a fantastic experience.
  • Current on-going bigger projects you will learn about and get involved in the Tofo area relate around Manta Rays and Devils Rays, this is in conjunction with the Mozambique government to study and conserve this amazing species. The Inhambane coastline is a migratory corridor for not only Manta Rays but, whale sharks, bull sharks and most importantly a breeding area for Mantas. The research for the Manta and Devil Rays is a long terms project studying these rays in detail from mapping them, studying them and even looking into the threats around them.
  • Whale Sharks are a huge part of the work going on here. This is one of the best places to see them in southern Africa and is often a reason people make the journey to this area. This is a large feeding area so MMF works to tag the sharks and work with the local population on education around these species and how to protect their environment and this endangered species.

Experience the passion and commitment these top researchers have to each specific project giving you a small summary into a huge project that will change the environment for the better, and the MMF team would be happy to even keep you updated in the future on how things are unfolding on the specific project once you return home.

There will be some additional included activities on a couple of your days to get you out and about and exploring this gorgeous ecosystem.

One day you will take to the sea for your Ocean Safari, this will be a great introduction to the area and if you travel in June-October you may even be lucky enough to jump in and have a swim with the mighty humpback whales as they cruise past Mozambique.

Another day you will take to the mangroves, this is a extremely important and endangered habitat to it’s great to get out and explore. You will explore the incredible mangroves of Barra and spend moments of pure nature seeing fantastic birdlife and a chance to see the flamingos.  This tour is about 2 hours long as you gently paddle and explore the labyrinths of waterways.

The last included additional activity will be a half day snorkelling expedition into the estuary. It is a 30-minute walk through the mangroves and over the mudbanks of the estuary to the snorkelling reef. The reef itself is very shallow and full of life. The first things that you will be spotting are a myriad of crazy coloured sea stars, and peculiar looking sea cucumbers. But when your eyes start to adjust you will begin to see other ocean critters. A variety of creatures from crabs, frogfish, pipefish, cowfish, pufferfish and much more. But of course, the stars of the show are the sea horses –which come in a variety of sizes and colours. You will have an experienced guide who will help you to spot these beautiful little creatures.

When not busy with your special projects you will of course have time to explore the golden beaches, laze by the pool and soak up the Mozambique sun!
